Pigeon Talk

I remember seeing a video where the whole thing was elevated with mesh on the bottom. Actually I think it was just plastic netting, not even wire mesh. He had a bunch of planks running the length of the run. Had to watch where he stepped, but it seemed to work.

I think I'm gonna do hardware cloth, and then hopefully with some support boards it'll hold me, especially if I try to stick to standing on the supports.

I've been debating ideas for them, and I think the best thing for me to do in the short-term is to move one group of my bantam cochins and give the pigeons their pen. I can move/mount the current cage in that pen, and be able to train them to fly in and out of it, while still being inside a secure run.

The section marked in yellow is where I'm thinking. Eventually, I wouldn't mind moving them upstairs in my workshop, and somehow figure out how to use the door marked in orange. This pic was during my 2 pen expansion for my Black Copper Marans and Cream Legbars. I may sell the BCMs and move the pigeons in their run, its the next one to the right of the yellow. I don't know! :barnie

Looks good. You've got plenty of space to decide what works best. I can't believe you're gonna sell some chickens to use there run for the pigeons though! Methinks that there will soon be an epidemic of pigeon math!

You should the duck and chicken math at her place...:lau
Not that I have much room to talk..

Yep, I want it be something like five feet wide by eight feet long, and I want to be able to walk into it so it's gonna have to be six feet tall. And I'll also do an attached aviary so they can be outside but not get eaten by hawks or cats, lol. And I want it slightly elevated off the ground with a mesh floor for airflow and easy cleaning. Still trying to figure out how I want to do a floor that's both mesh and will support my weight when I walk in.
Sounds good. Definitely the best idea to have something you can walk in. I can't walk in mine and it can be a pain to do things whilst not letting them out! A mesh floor is good but it can be a real pain to clean when they're molting. Feathers and poop stick real good to mesh. Maybe a mesh floor with raised boards could work?

Well, see, I like "little" chickens and "little" ducks. Hence, why I like pigeons. lol
The BCM eggs came from a friend, from a promise made years ago. He said when he got his breeding program up and running, I'd get eggs. He held to his promise, and 17 of 18 shipped eggs hatched. While I love the chickens, and their beautifully gorgeous eggs, they really don't fit into my program of bantams. So I'm torn. Their space would work out great for the pigeons, and yes, allow my multiplication skills to run crazy for sure. But I'm pretty good with division and subtraction too. So I have some deciding to do.

And speaking of mesh flooring... do pigeons not do well with a dirt/deep litter floor like chickens?

I need to practice my subtraction and division more..:lau

I'm not sure really with a dirt floor? I don't see why not but I like to keep poop to a minimum. The poop and dander has a very high protein content which can cause respiratory problems for humans over a period of time so when it dries it may not be so good.

Hmm, maybe then I should just go with a solid floor with bedding?

I do like deep litter very much for chickens but it doesn't feel right for pigeons somehow. I too like too keep poop to a minimum and with a solid floor that means daily scraping. I don't really mind and it only takes a few minutes. I think it takes about a month to fill a 5 gal bucket for my neighbors compost pile.

I think if I were to go to a mesh floor I would consider expanded steel mesh. I've seen it used in racing lofts although many use solid floors too. I think it is strong enough to walk on with the correct support.
