Please Help! My female Black Swedish duck is acting weird!

I understand your worry, I have had this happen to me. What feed is she on? And does she have access to oyster shells? Have there been any change in routine that could be the causing stress? How many ducks do you have?

What is happening is that her body is not producing enough calcium to cover the egg she is trying to make. Access to oyster shells is good to have because it gives her the added calcium she needs, she knows when she needs it and will eat it if available.

It won't hurt to try and give her a warm bath, it can be relaxing for her.

Thank you for your help! I will buy some oyster shells and make sure that’s available to her, and I’ll also give her a warm bath. Do you know if putting Epsom salts in the bath will help?

I have two ducks, a black Swedish and a pekin. Both female. There’s been no routine changes, just the same old lock up coop at night then let them out in the morning, allowing them to swim in their little pond and roam around on the grass. I’ve never seen this happen to her before, and I’ve also never seen her act like this before. But I’ll be sure to get the oyster shells, so thank you very much!

I have a Pekin that had this happen a few times. I could feel an egg when I felt her. I bought liquid calcium and gave her a good dose before bed. In the morning she laid an extremely large surprise. It was a fully formed egg, with another fully formed egg inside of that one. It was humongous. We have cameras so I was able to go back and see her laying it. She struggled horribly but she got it out. I felt her again and I still could feel a lump there. So I gave her another dose that night and to my surprise she laid another egg inside of an egg!
When I felt her belly it was finally empty.
She was eating and drinking and seemed perfectly fine other than me noticing her laying down more than usual.
I think a gave her a full teaspoon over some mushed peas. I knew she’d devour the peas and get the whole teaspoon in.
This is what I found at a local bird store. Good Luck.

Wow. I’m so sorry your pekin had to go through laying those 2 huge painful eggs, but I’m so happy she’s all better now. Thank you so much for the advice, I will definitely be using this for her. Hopefully it’ll help. Once again, thank you for prvoiding so much information and solutions, you guys are a really big help! :)

You’re welcome!!!! If you want you can Start keeping track of her eggs, I made a calendar and marked all issues I had for two months. Along with a list of meds and serving given daily. I am a visual person so this helped Me keep track when trying to get advise. Let us know how her eggs are once you get some calcium supplements in her.

I hope it helps her. I’m still having problems with her. She has very thin shelled eggs. I supply oyster shell, she’s on Layer feed and now I give her daily supplements of calcium citrate and she still has goofy eggs. Sometimes her eggs are normal, sometimes they are very oblong, sometimes they are flat on one side, sometimes they are very thin on one side that you can almost see through it, sometimes they are shiny and sometimes they are dull and matte. LOL
I’m assuming she just has reproductive issues and this is normal for her. I do need to keep up with her calcium almost daily or she can get stuck again. I really don’t know what else I can do. I probably should post a new thread about her issues. Let us know how everything goes with her.

I’m pretty sure I did a full teaspoon if not a little more. You need a good dose to help her get that egg out.

Aw. I'm so sorry to hear your still having troubles. I posted a new thread with important updates, so hopefully that'll give you some more information. If I give her this stuff, will it make her eggs weird? She is usually a really good layer and lays beautiful perfect eggs. Will this affect her laying? Will I have to keep on giving it to her? Was your duck always a bit weird with laying eggs? Sorry for all of the questions.
