Post impacted crop surgery

Hey guys!!!

So I recently had to do impacted crop surgery on one of my beautiful BR. It’s been about five days since the surgery, and she’s doing really really well. She’s been eating all the scrambled eggs I give her(not too much, just small portions with probiotics mixed in), drinking lots of water, has lots of energy, and just overall seems to be thriving! The only thing I’m worried about is how her would is healing... it’s a rather large, dark scab, and I’m just concerned it’s not healing the way it’s supposed to be. Unfortunately I couldn’t suture it, and the vet glue I had got didn’t work super well, so I wrapped it up gently with some gauze and a wound wrap. Although I felt very confident in myself and did plenty of research(or I never would have attempted it), I’m still worried, as there’s one or two small feathers that I don’t think I cut short enough and sort of grew into the scab.. My dad thinks it looks like it’s healing well, but I’m not so sure. Also, before anyone mentions it, I cleaned those feathers surrounding the wound!!!

Was there any specific video in particular that helped you learn how to do this? If so, would you send me the link? I'm about to make the decision to do this myself on my Rooster if hes not better in a day or two.

Also, I have a few other posts that list all the items I used and a few other things! I didn't end up suturing it as I didn't trust my abilities to do that, however I did use a liquid bandage. Not sure how much it did for it though, it pretty much healed on its own! If you have other questions please feel free to ask! I'm no professional by any stretch but I do have a chicken that has completely healed from a successful at-home crop surgery!

How did your chicken fare after your last post? We're trying every conservative thing for our barred rock's impacted crop, and no good results yet. May have to do surgery. Hope your outcome was positive, ultimately.

I’m not going to lie, doing the surgery itself was pretty damn nerve wracking, but I’d do it a million times if I had to, because my girl is absolutely thriving now! She’s gained all her weight back, her comb is standing up again, and she’s made a complete recovery. Healed SUPER quickly, too. I didn’t even suture it, just used some liquid bandage and wrapped it up for a few days and she was good to go!! If it’s something you’re not too nervous to try, and it seems like the only option, I would recommend doing it! Also, I put a few drops of vetRX on her nose before I did it, and she barely even squirmed! Chickens are pretty damn resilient.
