Preserving Your Harvest

I'm going to try and do tomato paste tomorrow. I've never made it before but I still have so many romas and don't need anymore salsa or stewed tomatoes. But I don't have a food mill so getting the seeds out should be interesting. I'll blanch them to peel them

Just baked 1 loaf of lemon poppyseed zucchini bread and 2 loaves of chocolate zucchini bread. And, I currently have 2 loaves of pumpkin zucchini bread baking.

I'll bet is smells good in your kitchen!

I've been thinking about getting one of these. I mostly can stewed tomatoes so always tried to get rid of some seed and just dealt with the rest. I've only seen videos of them in action. Don't they only puree? Would save so much work though.

I'm not sure what all they do. My parents had one that peeled and deseeded but it was hand crack and made a mess everywhere

Oh, that's good to know. I was wondering about that. I wish I knew someone that had one. I looked online at a few but been so busy. Now I've almost canned enough tomatoes anyway. Was just thinking about next year.

I'm just going to do it the slow way tomorrow. Blanch the tomatoes and scoop the seeds away, for the paste. I've already saved some seeds for next year. I've never done that before, always just bought started plants. I try to start some from bought seeds but they never grow good for me. Next year, I'm going to get a grow light for them. I'm saving corn kernels, pepper seeds, and bean seeds too

I just realized I wrote hand crack instead of hand crank! That's hilarious🤣

I mostly do stewed never made paste. I may try a bit next year. I've saved heirloom tomato seeds for a good while now. A little messy but not hard. They've always sprouted better than any ones I bought. I also have had purchased seed packs not be the correct variety. It take a while with tomatoes to realize it and is then usually too late to start more. Once I had 3 obviously different varieties come from one packet!

As for the seeds in the canning, it just let's them know it's homemade with love! 🤣
