Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

So mixing sulphur with a little diatomaceos clay, should work as a mite preventive? (Please accept I'm no where near as savvy as you) .This hours of searching Knocks me out. Life has never been as difficult as it is now. I'm trying to prevent accidents. I'm literally shaking it's so stressful

I was trying to find a pure vit c supply without zinc and additives, again no information. I think serum may be the best. I'm in need of topping up supplies

Thanks so much for your input as always :)
I don't know how to treat mites in chickens - I dread the day I have to! So best to take advice from the chicken experts on that.
I don't believe DE does anything, but I do believe sulphur kills mites but I am really not the person to listen to on that.
I just happen to be reasonably good at chemistry and therefore can sift through lists of ingredients and figure which are harmful and which aren't. Not all 'additives' are a problem for example, and if the vitamin C is for you, some zinc would be beneficial as it is essential for the immune system. They even sell zinc supplements to accelerate getting over colds and flu etc.

I think Agatha laid an egg this morning I'm not 100 percent sure. I'm trying to keep an eye on her as much as possible. I think I'll give Tina some calcium to

Marie, the product Pestene that they use in Oz is a mix of sulfur powder (spelled sulphur in UK) and rotenone powder (known in UK as Derris).
I believe Derris/rotenone was withdrawn in the UK (ironic as it is an entirely plant derived product). However sulphur powder is very commonly used by gardeners and should be available in any garden centre.
Is there any truth to wood ash helping prevent mites. I burn a lot of oak and spread the ash in the favorite bathing places. We've never had a chicken with mites but I don't know if it is the wood ash or just good luck.

Here mites & lice are spread by the wild bird populations. We have lots of birds. That being said, I have only really had problems when a bird has been sick & unable to preen properly. While I have thrown wood ashes into the run @ times I can't say it's actually done anything ~ except make the white girls particularly dirty! 🤣

My experience is much the same as Ribh's. I put woodash in the chickens' dust holes but I can't guarantee it's making a difference. However, in my case the hens live on sand which might dessicate mites and lice and maybe we have fewer wild birds to contend with than Ribh does. Anyway, even sick hens have remained free of mites and lice so far.
