Silkie rooster too big for serama hen?!?!

WAY to big! You can't have a bantam hen with a standard rooster. He will likely kill or injure her in the making process. A bantam Silkie rooster would probably be a good match for her, but your boy even though he's sweet is going to hurt her.

I can't imagine it would be dangerous if he's an actual bantam silkie. I have large standards that regularly mounted a Japanese hen with little issue

Really? He's huge for her. I've been told that standard rooster shouldn't mate with bantam hens, and that it can be dangerous.

Oh, I didn't know this. Interesting. I guess that makes sense, though it makes more sense to me to have standards and bantams.

All my silkies are bantam (only ones in the US that are sold) but I think that the Serama is too small for that rooster.

North America, more specifically Louisiana. I thought both silkie and seramas were both bantam as well. But this serama hen is particularly small. I wasn’t sure if it would work or not.

Thank you all for the reply. My roo is no bigger than 2-3 lbs (pet quality obviously lol) so it’s absolutely possible he has something else in his genetics to make him larger. He’s my only sweet and gentle rooster and was just hoping she could have a partner. However, I have a feeling that you all may be correct. Although he’s sweet, he’s just too big. I hate that she has to be alone. Selfishly, was hoping to have some serama/ silkie crosses lol

My large silkie rooster, & Sumatra cockerel in the bantam coop are able to breed a tiny OEGB hen that size without hurting her.

I've had an 8lb Buff Orpington rooster mate a Mille Fleur D'uccle hen several years without doing harm.

If you are concerned about injury though, if he's a rough dude, I'd suggest doing AI to breed them.
