*Phew!*
Glad to hear it. I was worried that they were all going to check out on me now that their professional lives were done. it makes sense the laying is an issue that you mentioned, as it is just too intense. They are bantam and yet their eggs are huge. When I fed them better protein feed trying to fatten then up a little (too thin!) They just made bigger eggs  The RIR would put on a few ounces on their bums, (better feathers) they didn't give it all away to eggs.

I suggested they all take weekends off from laying, a 5 day workweek is fine... But they never listen to me (women!)* They (correctly) pointed out I cleaned the coop and fed them 7 days a week, but that isn't the same...

My girl's will be 3 years old in December/January, not sure how to celebrate, but we must have a party.

*Yes, I am a woman too... Which is how I know they are stubborn and not always very logical.

Anyway... Thanks for the reassurance... Much appreciated 💖
mine, all that reached 3yr's stopped laying and went down hill

They are wonderful chickens. I hope yours make it successfully through henopause.

Good morning to everyone,
Coffees so nice and hot, fires warming up the house, and it is pouring down rain.
I got a lot of precooking done yesterday for dinner today. I am making ham[with a brown mustard/clove/brown sugar all over it] my homemade kraut, spiced red cabbage heated, hot german potato salad, carrots , green salad, apple cider, and, apple pie & ice cream for 13 of us, -8 that cant be here.
have a wonderful day, praying for you always, Oma

I love hot german potato salad but I don't know how to make it. Do you have a recipe you would be willing to share?

I'm starting on The Big Meal for Thursday. I'm trying to spread it out so that it's a little less stressful. It shouldn't be, it's just the two of us. But since I do this about twice a year, it is stressful for me. Right now I can cross off going to the store, and making the bread for the stuffing. Progress, progress... :)

A little bit at a time is smart. I keep trying to convince my wife of that.

I know someone with a 6.5 year old leghorn. It's not impossible.
Is she (the hen, not the care-taker-human) still skittish, or do they calm down at some point ;) in their old age ?

I shouldn't complain, 3 of my leghorns will "put up" with a forced cuddle from me, and the forth will let me get near if she is truly hurting which, thankfully, is not often. She is in henopause and sometimes has a rough night, so I get to hold her and stroke her head while she rests. But most days she is a little dart flying from one end of the coop to the other to avoid the human-caretaker's cuddles. (Aka: "me")

I keep picturing some well-meaning animal protection inspector seeing how this chicken behaves around me and then having me arrested since this poor hen is obviously being abused.

In summer when there is lots of open room for her to dart away from me, and she always takes it, I look at her and say: "I've never once been mean to you! Stop acting like I beat you up!" She just freezes when I get within 10 ft, and looks at me, trying to decide if she should run to her left or right to avoid contact. I should have named her Oliver Twist, (had I known) instead I named her Lavender. She is anything but calming.
