Thanks! That's good to knowI've heard from numerous sources that as they age they get more speckled. And I would say it's true with my girl!
Aww I'm so sorry for your lossWe're talking about one of my all-time favorite breeds here!TOTALLY, 101% recommend!
Mairead, to put it simply, was my baby girl.
Not only was she breathtakingly gorgeous, but she followed me everywhere, got in my way, learned the signal for treats before anyone else, gave me "kisses," (yes, I ended up with a swollen lip after that one
), and was the best garden helper you could ask for.
Goodness, I loved my Mairead.
You can imagine how devastated I was 3 months ago when a hawk took her from me.
Oh, and they're great layers of perfect, medium brown eggs!

I only have experience with Speckled Sussex Cockerels and then eventually roosters. I bought a straight run from a breeder. They were the most docile males I have ever had. In fact my 11 year old daughter showed a pair of cockerels at the county fair. She picked them both up (one in each arm/hand) and walked them to the Show Arena without so much as a peep out of either of them. They love to follow you around and beg for treats and attention. They were slower to mature than some of my other breeds such as BArred Rock, but they were not as slow as the buff orpington.
