I made the sad choice of ordering from ideal poultry. They don’t overnight to the Midwest in winter! So sad.

If I could i'd keep my older girls too ~ I've raised heritage chickens and turkeys before but never BBs. So it's all new to me (Sort of) I have a bb bronze hen but she's strictly a pet~ Friendliest bird I own :wee

So how you gonna eat them? They are all gonna be friendly.

That's the one thing i'm nervous about.. I might end up keeping one but i'll just have to suck it up and get over with when the time comes. I've done it before with chickens so I think i'll do fine with the turkeys..

Turkeys are harder to catch, hold and kill. Chickens are easier and quicker. You end up with too much time to change your mind with turkeys. Hopefully they are an obnoxious batch that drive you bananas. :hmm I haven't had broad breasted either, only heritage. Should be interesting to see how it goes for you.

I sure am glad I don’t raise meat birds lol I don’t think I could handle it

Thats too bad! To raise and feed them to realize your inexperience was taken advantage of just so she could rid herself of the boys. What did your SIL say when you told her what this friend did?

mmm... guessing a jerk. unikely to have 22 out of 22 be males in any kind of straight run. Could happen, but....odds would be low.

Hm, that’s true!!

I really like my SIL and don’t blame her at all. I’ve never met her friend and am not likely to, so I’ve long since let it go. I assumed jerk too.

And hey! That whole incident led me to this fantastic website, so it isn’t alllll bad!!! I’ve learned so much here.

That’s good, does no good to hold onto it. Although it is hard to believe someone would do something like that.

I just ordered some hatching eggs from Meyers. I have ordered eggs from them a few times with great results. My 2 roos are from them

I just ordered some light brahmas and barred rocks to hatch
Beginning of summer I hatch my bantam

Nice! I have thought about ordering hatching eggs from them but they don’t have all the breeds I want and plus ordering chicks is easier anyway. But maybe one day!

Awww that is so sad! So sorry! :( :hugs

Now I must know... what was the Rooster Debacle of 2017? :pop

That’s true! Forgot about that. Sorry, was somewhat meaning specifically New Zealand and America in my example rather than the specific hemispheres since you’re from NZ but forgot to specify.

Awesome!! I love my EEs from there :D

Nice! Any specific breed?

How exciting!! It really is like Christmas morning! LOL that’s unfortunate about the roosters :( this year they apparently have a new 100% gender accuracy policy so they try to get it 100% but chicks are animals so if they get it wrong, they will refund you or send you a replacement chick. So they do try to make it right, which is cool, but like you said, then you still have the roos. It doesn’t really address the situation of having the roos. You still have to do something about them, whether it’s keep them, or rehome them, or eat them, or whatever. Still need to be dealt with. Which is definitely a pain!! But that said, my order was all females, even the extra mealmaker chick, and it was the same breed as some of the others, so that was cool. Can’t wait to see what this order is. I wish I was close enough to pick up chicks!!

Awesome!! You will have a nice egg basket for sure!! That’s why I ordered a leghorn and another EE. I like having the color lol

Wow that’s a lot of birds!!! that’s awesome though!! Do you plan on keeping them all or will you sell some? Are the turkeys gonna be meat birds? Emus!? That’s cool!! What do people do with them?

Yup, unless you’re a night owl like me lol

X2 lol

Awesome! I love EEs. They are so much fun to watch grow up. :D I wish I lived close enough to a hatchery to pick up but that could be dangerous LOL

That is definitely a cool name!! And those are nice reasons for getting those birds :)

Aww I’m sorry :(

:(

What breeds?

Awwww so sweet! Good luck with the chicks!

OMG sooooo cute!!!! :love

The breeds I have:

Black Australorp
Black Sex Link
New Hampshire Red
Production Red
White Leghorn
Easter Egger
Light Brahma
Buff Orpington
Isa Brown
Ayam Cemani
Dominique
Silver Duckwing Old English Game
Porcelain d'Uccle

And a few Ayam Cemani crosses :)

yes that is one thing that is disappointing is they don't have most of the breeds as hatching eggs.
I ordered the bantam assorted eggs last year (6 of them) they guarantee at least 3 different breeds of the bantams they have in the mix, 5 hatched the 6th one died half way through.
I got an easter egger, 2 mille fleur booted, buff Brahma and mottled Cochin.

I had an predator get into the coop in the fall and lost all but 3 of my chickens, I already had 5 besides the ones I hatched.

I bet it will feel like forever until your little cuties get here

Nice! Quite the breed selection! How do you like the NHR and Brahmas? Almost got a New Hampshire but then opted for some other breeds instead. And I wanted Brahma or Cochin but they are so big!! Also, I have heard ISA Browns lay better than some of the other sex links, do you find that to be true?

Wow that is quite the assortment! That’s awesome!!

Sorry you lost your chickens :( I know probably nothing can replace them, I lost my favorite hen the fall before this past one, but hopefully your new chicks will help a little bit!

And thanks! It really will I am sure! Lol

I love my New Hampshire Reds! "Elephant" (my NHR hen) is very sweet, and she is my heaviest girl next to my Light Brahma. She is also a good layer.

I do not like my Brahma's as much as I like my other breeds, I have had three and they are all moody, and only lay 2 or 3 times a week. They do love to eat! One of my Brahma's weighs 10 lbs!

My Isa Brown hen is my best layer, she lays medium sized eggs every day. Yes, I have kept many Sex Links and she has them beat! :p

Sounds like I should have ordered a NHR after all!! Lol oh well, maybe next order!

Oh wow, they don’t sound very good! Ha that was my fear, they are so big and not supposed to be great layers, I figured they must eat a ton! Wow that is a big bird!

Oh wow they sound awesome!! I think TSC usually gets ISA Browns in for Chick Days.... I may have to go sneak a couple home :lau

Haha, they are great birds! ;) Unfortunately she is my only one, I just picked her up from a random layers bin at our local Co-op.

If you want a gentle giant, I would go with a New Hampshire Red or a Cochin!

They are awesome! And they are my quietest, most timid birds. And they don't mind being handled at all :) I actually purchased mine from TSC!

I just checked the breed list for 2019 at our local feed store and they are apparently getting New Hampshire’s.... very tempting... it is about a month earlier than my other chick order though so idk if that would work, they would be way older than the others, plus I am going to AZ that week :( maybe I should call Meyer’s and see if they could add one to my order :p

That sounds perfect! I love holding them but mine don’t always like being held lol

Aw that’s awesome! Seems I definitely need to get some lol
