I hope everyone is having a lovely weekend! A few months ago I posted the bird below. I had thought Andy was a hen for the longest time, until I heard him crow one day. I quickly shipped him to my friends farm, since I can't have roosters here.
Here is Andy now, he is about 6 months. He lives in a pen with 4 or 5 Orp hens. He has not crowed in the 1-2 months he's been there and he hasn't started trying to breed. Is this normal behavior for these guys? When are they sexually mature?

Even with the saddle feathers? I was told he once did a rooster dance when she put new girls in with him, that was his only true rooster moment (besides the crowing at my house).

A confused rooster? A crowing hen? Heck, I don't know.
Definitly a rooster, just give him time to mature.

We had threats of thunderstorms today and we got a little break from the heat so my crew took to the run and I was able to take some pictures. They'll be nine months in a couple of weeks.
Thor being smug because he gets to be in with the girls (on a trial basis). I had to crop my SLW out of the foreground.
I PROMISE I have nine girls, all black and shiny. I just can't ever get good pictures because as soon as I squat to take a picture, this happens.
I caught Pierre mid-spin, so his neck looks funny, but this picture catches a little brownish color on his hackles. Is that red leakage? That's MoMo on the right. He's the ugliest Orpington on the planet, love his heart. I pried him out of his egg WAY later than I should have and now he just wanders the property like our own personal Quasimoto.
This is how Pierre normally carries himself
I couldn't get pictures of Roo and Blue. They wouldn't come outside and there is NO WAY I am taking a picture inside of my coop right now. It's a tangle of fans, extension cords, and thawed water bottles. All liberally sprinkled with chicken poo, of course...
I spoke poorly of my little broody. I think she had to take some time to resign herself to having to sit on lumpy, uncomfortable eggs because she returned to the nest last night and stayed at it all day today. And I feel like a real veteran now because I got to experience my first broody poo.
