I don't have room for turkeys but I'm trying to talk my in laws into putting a few turkeys out for next year's Thanksgiving feast 😂 At least maybe if I don't see them everyday I will be able to eat them!
I don't know... if you had to deal with them every day you might still be okay with it.

I can't bring myself to eat any of my birds...so I understand the struggle!

I think it would make a big difference if I went into it thinking, these are going to be food, but I didn't, so mine are all pets with egg and fertilizer benefits 😂
At first I did go in to it with that mind frame but with quail. The ducks where a total impulse that lead me in to left field. When I got the 4 Pekin, they where rehomed pets, and I promised to let them continue to live as pets. So those where a no go on harvesting. Then when I ordered the rest of the ducks, I got a spilt shipment about 2 weeks apart. So I had 2 rounds of baby ducklings to raise right in the beginning. To me, it was like having 17 puppies around. Much louder and maybe messier, faster for sure (runners). I just feel in love with them and pretty much knew at that point I couldn't kill one.

I cried the first chicken I slaughtered.
It was a Cornish X and those things are like puppies too. They are so sweet. They just want to be around you. I took her out behind the Shack, talked to her to try and keep her calm. I strung her up and slit her throat. Not to be morbid, but I've always believed if your going to kill something you should be able to look it in the eyes while you do it, so I did. It was more difficult physically and emotionally than I had anticipated. I used a sharp knife and did it by hand, but it too longer than expected. The blood was all over. I purposely chose the more "intimate" route for the first time. I wanted to be sure it was something I could do, harvest something I had cared for. I didn't like it, but that one chicken was able to make a lot of food. It provided me with a short term companion, education, and nutrition.

Most of the ones I've slaughtered have been bought for meat or been rude boys. Meat birds don't get names but they do get attention and that still forms a bond with them.

I've not slit anymore throats after that. I prefer a faster death. It still sucks every kill, but ya know.. try to be respectful to the animal, thank it for what it's providing, and waste as little as possible.

Rude boys are a threat and all threats get eaten. Crock pot or vulture, they'll be gone quick enough.
And that's that.

I love that Trim! Really gives you and your boys a better appreciation of what it takes to get food on the table. Not just the price but the whole process!
If things around here move more towards dual purpose, I'll have to get my husband to process...I am just too tender hearted for my feathers!

I don't remember if I said this here already. The recent rooster was the first one that Xaiden knew where it came from. Here saw me walk in with the carcass and asked about it. When I told him who it was he thought it was gross (sounds like his momma). I was able to explain why it wasn't gross without being too graphic, and he no longer thought it to be gross. I was quite proud of him. :D
