We had a whoops. 'Sebastian' is a girl
She never drummed at his place. She didn't drum at my place. For a week. Then three days ago she started drumming at me.
So, we are doing a swap to get me a boy. Take two of getting Ciara a boyfriend! Who will still be named Sebastian, lol, because I like the name for an emu, darn it.
To be safe, we decided we are going to DNA test the last three young unpaired emus he has that he thinks are all boys. But he'd never done it before and wanted help so I went over to help him and had a blast. We caught the birds easily enough, I plucked the feathers, we put colored bands on them to tell them apart, and then I just hung out and we chatted.
He does bison, mainly, so I'm more experienced with emus and birds than him. So we talked emus for awhile, I got to play with the juvenile emus (I didn't hatch any babies this year so I needed my baby fix) and he's excited to do DNA testing with their eggshells this year, since he didn't know that was a thing.
I picked out the boy I told him I'd like (if he does turn out to be a boy). He was super curious the entire time I was in the pen and he fell in love with my hair and kept sneaking up behind me to play with it. So, hopefully he's a boy, and hopefully he's one his son isn't too attached to to sell.
Oh, and he has a pair of ostriches. So I got to pet the ostriches. The male was dancing a bit when I first got there, so that was cool.
Here they are, George and Martha:
And George peering down at me:
I would like to point out that the fence is eight feet tall.
Then I helped him sex his quail - his wife recently purchased them and they're not too familiar with them yet so I told him I was happy to help and sexed them all out for him.
Oh, and I saw the bison too:
I left after about two hours, with three bags of emu feathers, plans to swap the birds once the DNA results come back, a promise that I'd save some of my growout pullets for him to buy when he brings the boy over, and a bison steak that we'll be grilling up for dinner in a little bit.
It was a good day
