Our buff orpington (from a reputable breeder) have given us chicks with this colour. I only have google to compare to and was expecting perfectly orange chicks, but they all have some form of blue through the wings, and half have the head markings. Is this just something that can happen or is it some sort of leakage from somewhere in the breeding?

Well that's odd. We're positive both parents were buff orps? Also, can you post pictures of the parents?

Buff orp chicks should be solid orange, for sure. Even hatchery buff orp chicks are solid orange, I've never seen a purebred buff orp chick with coloration like that.
