Greetings to Everybody on the second day of 2023!

Not a good day today, weatherwise everything's fine, the Ducks were nice and friendly, even the Mallards came in for a visit, but… I am afraid my berry-garden is doomed!
You remember, i dug out the first three plant holes for the gooseberry- and the jostaberry bushes two days ago and - it was not raining here since then, so today i wanted to dig out the bushes but first had a look at the holes and...

All three holes have filled up with ground-water! I knew my hill is wet, but being that wet just ducks! I begin to understand why the Elderberries failed last year, why the Blueberry didn't grow and why the fruit-trees growth was so stunted…
I don't know what to do now, Blanca Duck said »dig it out wider so that we can play "spot the duck" in the mud!« - But that's not really a solution. I know, best would be to dig out drainage ditches further up the hill and drain the water sideways, but doing so just using a spade...?
I have drained the water out of one of the holes and dug down to 60cm (2'), maybe the water drains away between the rock and the loam...

I could really use some ideas!

I wish I could help but I am leaning towards Blanca ducks idea. ;)

Well we are going away for a few days which means leaving Elizabeth with the duck sitter. She was upside down twice today so I don't think she will still be here when I get back. Duck sitter comes twice a day but that's not enough for making her upright, especially at night. I usually go up at least twice at night if she needs turning over. Duck sitter can't tube feed her. I wish I wasn't so attached. Canadian Wind is right, I need to cull her.

I'm sorry, I wish I wasn't right in this. We try so hard and get so attached to them, but often we have to ask ourselves if we're doing it for selfish reasons or for the good of the animal. It's a difficult question.

*BIG HUGS*
