Flying by the seat of my pants!
Good Morning and thank you, Patti!I always look forward to Chance pics and pics from Chris. and anyone else who posts on here. Can't ever get enough pics!!
Good Tuesday Morning!!
How many cockerels do you have? You don’t want your females tore up when breeding gets hot an heavy. I understand where Mary is coming from I feel the same way when my husband goes off to the Harley shop!![]()
The bantam flock consists of 7 birds if you count Pearl. There are 2 males there, and so far doing okay together. There is plenty of space for them to get away and with the 2 pins and vegetation, plenty of hiding places. I've actually been thing of building little "obstacle course" type thing to play on or hide behind.
In the large fowl flock, including birds of all ages, there are 15 birds, next weekend there will be 19. To the best of my knowledge, there will be 6 males that will be thinned out to 3.
Of the 3 remaining males, I'd like to make 2 flocks.
I'd like to make 1 flock of the AC cockerel and the AC, and 2 EE pullets for fibro crosses and pure AC. With the difference in egg color it would be easy to tell what is what. The idea is to build a run connected to the shack and keep them segregated from the rest of the flock. Ultimately, I'd like to have 2 more AC pullets in this flock when egg hatching time comes.
The BB Maran and Dampierres grew up together and are said to have always got along good. The original owner has been great, and tells me all about their temperament. So I am making my decisions a bit blind, but with the property and flock they have, I can't imagine them being deceitful. They seem to really love their birds, and are also pretty educated, lol at least based on my education.
So the main flock would be the 2 roos, 3 Turken, 2 Welsummer, 1 Barred Rock, 1 Dorking, 1 GL Wyndotte, and potentially 2 Light Brahmas if I call that ad... It'd be a 2:10, and I know that still not a good ratio. For now though I am going to see what I can do with them. If anything, both of the roo should be easy to get rid of down the line if needed.
According to the person I am getting the birds from the BBM is show quality. I studied his pictures and the Marans standard, and he just might be. It's be kind of neat to actually take him to shows if he is up to snuff.
There is also Paddy, and Shammy, but I'll just have to wait and see what to do with them. For the time I am considering them both special treatment. It would be nice if Shammy does turn out to be a pullet. Pending her temperament, she'd go with the main flock. Doing some research on meat birds, I've found out that the oriental game fowl plated a big roll in some of the current breeds available. O Shamo x Dampierre could make something... well something. It might be weird, might be neat, lol. Who knows?
