Here we go, dux on a pond that is slowly freezing over:

9pm and already -5° (23F) outside…
It is 9 degrees F here at 10:33 AM. Almost all of our ponds around us are frozen over that I have seen on my bus route. With the ducks keeping the water stirred it may take yours a little longer. I am amazed that they like that cold water but I saw some here on ponds that were geese and ducks, wild of course, and they didn't mind the cold until the ponds were frozen over. Good luck Frank getting them in that nice Duck house you have for them.

Close Call for Blanca Duck!

My phone is dead, need tom charge. After cleaning the driveway i wanted to walk up to the pond to see how much open water is left, when i heart a duck squeaking from the steepest part of the hill, so steep that i can't even crawl… Blanca Duck sat in the snow squeaking for help!
I somehow managed to get to her, together we slid downhill and i brought her on the patio. She had ice around her toenails, ice in her belly feathers, was shivvering and could not walk.
She will stay this night on the patio, she's better, she is able to sit on her legs, she is eating and drinking, like a Blanca Duck,m but still very weak. I am not sure if her bill is injured or if that is cat-food...
Will update later.

I saw a pond today that had ducks and geese in the remaining small part not completely frozen yet. It was 9 degrees F when I saw them. They all seemed like they could care less about the cold. I surely don't like it. I pray Blanca Duck stays alright. What was her Close Call Frank????
Sorry Frank, I know what happened to her now. I pray that she recovers alright.

Update on Blanca, here is what happened: I had to clean my driveway this afternoon, it took me three hours, pictures later, and after I was done with that I wanted to evaluate the pond situation. Walked up to the pond when I suddenly heart a duck crying for help and discovered Blanca Duck in a precarious situation. She was stuck in the snow on the steepest part of the hill, where not even the ducks are able to walk. no clue how that happened!
To save her I sat down in the Snow and slowly slid down the hill on my butt and picked her up on my way downhill.
She was unable to move her legs, had ice around her toenails and her belly feathers were wet and icy.
Now she is safe on the heated patio, eating and drinking like a Blanca Duck...
She will stay the night here and hopefully she won't have any frostbite on her feet.

They don't believe you.
They still wouldn't believe me, even after what has happened to Blanca this afternoon.
But they will believe me tomorrow morning!
This night -12° (10F) is forecasted and the pond might freeze over completely. Anyways the dux will be lousy cold in the morning and if i am able to get up at sunrise i will go up there and try to guide them down.

The water is still warmer than the frozen ground, that's why they stay in there. And they have that thick layer of insulation on their bellies.
9F? - Just got the update from the weather app:

-13° is 8.6F❗ - But the real kicker is the windchill with -17° (1.4F 🧊). And the pond is very exposed in the westerly directions…
