Good for you!!! That is what I had to do to one of my little Call Drakes only I did not band it, with the shape it was in I just had to cut it off and he was good to go. I too wonder if he can fertilize anything but he surely tries in the spring. His ended up being a round piece that was the size of a quarter that hung out and once snipped off he has been just fine. So glad you were able to save yours also. I had no help but was able to do it and he never even flinched.
OUCH! - Just OUCH!
Kudos to that drake for not flinching… 😵

I assume -20° Celsius ?!
Hopefully not Fahrenheit, that would be almost -30°
Which i have experienced in 2009 in LaCombe, AB.
I had to plug-in my rental car at the hotel, customer, pizza-place,… otherwise the engine would have frozen solid. Every customer parking spot had an electrical outlet.
Yes, that is Celsius. Didn't feel like doing the conversion. ;)

Less and less places have outlets to warm the engine block. Which is odd as it's practically a necessity here.

There are places further north that have to have their cars running 'round the clock it gets so cold!!!

The duck's let me in on a secret this morning:
Here we have to wait just for another two days before the days start to become longer again. - Precisely the amount of daylight time will increase again, stating on Sunday. - We're back on the path to summer again!

Wow, your sunsets have been earlier than mine! I check it every day and the earliest was 4:25 pm.

Sunrise is also later for you. Weird.

I knew it was coming up. I can't wait!!! I am not nocturnal!!! lol

A funny event today... From the previous winter I was used to the ducks coming out of their house in the morning and staying outside regardless of snow, ice etc. I figured they are just so happy to be outside and it would be like that always.

This year we have an additional flock with their own house. They were let out in the morning as I passed by for the dog walk and it was -3 C (26 F). That's not super bad at all but it is cold enough for them to often sit down and warm their legs.

When we returned ALL the ducks, both the new ones and the 2023 ones, were crowding around and inside the new house :)

They are so very cute. I got duck flu and order 12 babies. They added 4 "packing peanuts" I received an email from Ideal for hatchery choice at about $3 each. Yikes I have lost my mind. So much for getting out of the duck business. Ill post blurry pictures tomorrow. There are some Pekins, Swedish (both black and blue) what I think is Buff and some little brown ones with brown feet KC? So very cute. I also had my first death by pee pad ever. One got under the pee pad and her little friends ran over her. I've been using pee pads for years and never seen this.
