Any ideas what breed these mostly-black ducks are? I thought Ancona at first (which would be great) but there is too much black vs. the white areas. Their human assistant says they are calm, good layers and also get broody.

Black Swedish would be my guess. Very calm good layers but I've never had one sit. I think its more on the individual duck.

Thanks!

Later on I found 2 candidates:

- Blue Swedish because presumably you get them in blue, gray and black colors
- (related) Pomeranian duck https://muzoo.ch/en/animal/pomeranian-duck/

The lady who keeps them unfortunately doesn't have any detailed info, she just happened to receive eggs 15 years ago. She crosses them with Welsh boys and gets really good layers.

Never heard of Pomeranian but given your location that seems most likely. pretty ducks.

Well... Think of the Carst type geographical situation.
CaCO3 does get dissolved (even if it then re-crystallizes elsewhere).

Yes, we're definitely doing safety holes.
I bet you have plenty of dolje, polje and ponor where you live. (We integrated the same words in German)
The large caves that form inside of limestone are formed mostly through "acid rain", which forms when sulphur- and nitric oxides are released somewhere and combine with rain droplets in clouds. Yes, there is the process of hyper-carbonation where Calcium-bicarbonate is formed, but that is a very slow process and won't help a weak duckling out of its shell…

From the plumage they look exactly like my Black Swedish ducks, but Black Swedish have bodies more like Pekin ducks. The duck on the second picture almost looks like the screeching Magpies i got from Ideal Poultry in 2019.
