Flying by the seat of my pants!
Hey guys. It's been a very long day. I've done worked myself in to cramps, and a lot of groaning when I walk. I got a lot of stuff done today though.
I did the deep litter a little different this time. I put 2 bales of peat moss down and mixed in 9# of DE. Then I spread a 50# bale of rice hulls. Here's the idea of why...
Peat moss is hydrophibic when it's dry, it will actually repel water. DE is extremely absorbent. The reason to mix them is if any liquids do reach the floor the DE will suck it fast and then slowly wick out through the peat moss. The rice hulls will not absorb liquids, and will not compress like the shavings will. This will give it an aerated layer helping any liquids 1) disburse if it's a large amount spilled vs making a large puddle, 2) help air reach the lower level to keep any wicking action going...
The nest box was fitted the same way but with hay on top. I need to get some hinges and cut some wood to make a hatch for the bottom section.
Good night!
