Hey gang! It sure is quite in here today Patti.
How has your day been? I've made an alter to the current plans, and have spent most the day planning it out.

I've decided to get one of the jubilee Eng Orp roos, and breed them for purebreds. The lady I'm getting him from is completely dropping the breed and is the only person I know of in central fl who has them. I'm sure they are elsewhere, but I can't find them.

To alleviate the quietness, I will report back that I have only removed one of the two troublesome drakes, and am surprised how much calmer everything is in the pen. He isn't brave enough to be a bully without his mate to help him. All the same, he has to go, too. I am moving towards a drake-free establishment. It seems to be cheaper to buy fertile eggs when I have a broody duck than to feed a drake.

Drakes are good tasting birds. I refuse to eat my girls, but unwanted drakes well....

They are beautiful birds Chris. How many females do you have?
Currently I have 2 female. The general plan is to section of the first 6' of the shack for an interior pen. Then take the 2 quarantine pens, reconfigure them, bolt them to the shack, and cut a doorway between the two. It would give them 84 sq'ft inside and 42 sq'ft outside. Then assuming the boys get along, just let them free range during off season.

I spent a few hours over at the ladies house today. Mostly just having a fun chicken chat, but there was a bit of business chat too. Being she is completely getting out of the breed, she didn't mind discussing prices and competition.

So besides the business/breeding chat, I was I was immersed in rare breeds. I got to spend time with red gold pheasants, ringneck pheasants, roughly 35 breeds of chicken, chocolate and Narragansett turkeys, and three dogs. It was a day of therapy and education. She is just as nuts as me when it comes to breeds, but she's been doing it for 10 years. I was like a kid in a candy shop. :D
