I learned something new this morning...

An example would be Sherpa and sherpa. Sherpa is an ethnic group native to the mountain regions of Nepal in the Himalayas. While sherpa are guides to go up Mt. Everest, mostly made up of Sherpas, but is not a requirement to be a sherpa.

sherpa sherpa sherpa y'all.

I'm trying something a bit different with the baby runners brooder. The "feeging station" is raised up on a drip tray from a comericial coffee machaine. The ramp is just the grate from another drip tray.

The babies, as we know, are messy! However so far this seems to be working pretty decent so far. The ducklings have to put a bit of an effort to get to their water, and don't seem to just sit next to it, dribbling whenever they want.

The ramp only goes up about 1.5 inches, but the lip it rest on drops about 1.5 inches the opposite direction.

These little fluff balls are just a joy to be with and listen to. To my surprise (based on reading not experience) the Runners seem to be much more social than the Ancona where, and still are. When I slowly put my hand in there, most don't startle, and 2-3 typically come right to me. That chep chep chep sound is just priceless too!

Oh how I yurn for swing dance to make a comeback!
Today was and interesting day to say the least. For starters, the drip tray set up is working well with the babies. It's not stopped all those fluffy little butts from making a mess, but much less water.

I went on a bit of a nature walk today at a local pond/lake. There where about 12 ducks there including 3 juvies. This pond is only about 15 feet from a heavily trafficked road with average traffic doing 50 mph. :sick Now, this trip had nothing to do with me almost running over a Muscovy in the middle of the road yesterday. :barnie Nor did I have any plans to do anything about it... :confused: I was just going to sit there and watch them die to traffic, cause that's what people do here (FL) I guess. :idunno Never would I place my own morals over those I pay my taxes to... :smackThey know what is best. :tongue

That being said I did not bring home any more animals. Today...
:oops::oops::oops::oops:
Long story short, the ducks are wild, and I was informed they have been going there for about 6 years. I did happen to find their human friends that live off the lake. By the time I left, I was much happier to learn the ducks normally did not hang out on that lake. There is a private lake in the neighborhood that is much larger, with very little traffic. Apparently one of the Mrs. Scovy's made a nest near the road this year, and they have just been staying on that side only as of recent. If I had to guess, it's the one I about hit. When I whizzed past it, it didn't even spook.

I got to see my first Black Belly Whistler today. There where 4 of them there, and I absolutely feel in love with them. Such beauty, bold colors, with an absolutely elegant profile shape. Their shape reminded me of a swan. The neck and head where just so streamlined. I felt lucky to see them there. I've got no clue if they are rare, but I didn't even know about them till today. The pictures are not the best, but they stayed a healthy distance from me.

This is looking at the road from the lake side. In the right side, just past the large tree reflection I found another nest that had a bunch of broken eggs. Right next to the eletric pole on the left is where Momma Scovy had her nest. Any ideas why these birds would make a nest so close to traffic when there is ample room in safer places? The land I'm standing on here is county, and plenty of it behind me. Plus the other lake I mentioned which is about 3x the size of this one (about 1/2 the pond shown here).

What do you get when you cross a chicken with a cow?

Well it's settled. This weekend I'm taking a trip to pick up 2 Ayam Cemani. There are 4 for me to chose from ranging from 3-4 months in age. They also have chicks, but I have enough babies to manage right now. These are from, or intended to be, their breeding stock. With a bit of schmoozing I was able to secure them as they where not originally offered. The bloodline is grandson of Banko rooster to early raven hen and kali/raven hen w/ no GFF genetics. They do have Raven to GFF, but these are a separate line from those.

I'd pretend to fully understand the bloodlines, but I'm not there yet. What I do know is the other breeders I spoke with all had GFF birds, and they where all more or less culls, LOTS of red/burgundy leakage, white nails, and so on. These birds should be closer to the Indonesian standard, and from I can find, they are. A bit more of a game bird with tight feather, not so much like the European standard. Completely black from the tongue to toe nails, BLACK.
