What breed are you hatching now Chris? It’s sometimes hard to know and I cannot cut one open.
They are Light Brahma eggs, from the same flock as the two I have.

My meat bird plans are changing. I wanted to use the NNs for the mother's, but I found out they are actually hatchery quality. When I tried to find other NN pullets locally I was unsuccessful, and ebay hatching eggs have already done me no good.

There is a member who has Red Ranger x NN eggs, but we decided to wait till next spring as his egg production has dropped way off.

However, I would like them (my birds) to be ready to produce fertile eggs come spring time.

I called looking for pullets, but the batch my current LB came from was her last hatch she's doing this year.

Here shortly I'll go pick up 12 plus w/e was layed today. The incubator has been running for a couple of hours in preperation.

So sorry, Trim. I have figured out that the only way it is somewhat financially sustainable for me to have poultry here is to stick to common breeds - they are common simply because they thrive. I also find ducks hardier than chickens, but much messier, too. I find that having variety over time rather than all at once works better, as well. They all need the same conditions and the same feed.

Having said that, I am sure that everyone on the thread has loved the diversity of your flock, and it will have given you many fond memories. Even if you stick to hardy breeds from now on, you will see interesting birds and recall what a great time you had raising some yourself. That has its own value.
Is somebody chopping onions in here?
My eyes got a bit misty.
Thank you for the kind and wise words Kiwibird. Come the end of the year I don't think I'll have this many different breeds. It has been fun, but maybe a bit too much at once. Subtly had never been my strong suite.
