It could be anytime.. dux like to make critters suffer.. so they could be in pain for years before they go.
No pain here just the typical eat anything including and bird poop they happen to come across. :sick Of course I imagine you have trained Pearl to never eat Dux poop so she doesn’t die a painful death.

I am back from getting the drake. I came home with two ducks instead of one.

I felt really bad for them. The people were duck newbies and didn't really know much about ducks. They had seven total, got super lucky and only one was a drake, and they did not know the difference so I had to keep pointing out which bird we were trying to catch and they grabbed the wrong one a couple times.

Anyway, why I felt back for the ducks was because they were living under a trampoline with chicken wire strung up around the outside to keep them in, and it was a total mud pit under there. After we caught the drake, the woman mentioned that she wanted to downsize further and asked if I knew anyone who might want some more. I told her I could take some of the girls too if she wanted. Then she said she wanted to wait until spring because apparently they have a fox come through every year that eats some of their chickens and she's pretty sure it will get some of the ducks too. Just matter of fact about that, no attempt to keep them safe, she was just sure the fox would eat some of her birds.

In the end she told me I could take one of the girls too if I wanted, so I did. They are covered in mud that is probably composed largely of duck poop and they stink, poor things. I'm sure they'll be much happier in the emu pasture than they were under that trampoline.

I'm gonna have to come up with some names. I named the two from the other woman Sugar and Flour. So I want to either stick to that theme or just the theme of naming them after white things. I might call the drake Cotton if I go that route, haven't decided yet.

Here's a quack snack for ya!

That's horrible. I understand expecting losses, but not because your just handing them to the local wildlife.

It's good you where able to take the 2. I've rigged up some unsteady pins when the ducks where growing but not to actually live in. They are Pekins right?

Yep, these guys are pekins. Basically I've come into a whole flock of pekins in the last week, lol. Now I've got three girls and a boy.

I've done some weird temp pens myself, but this was nasty and that's how they'd lived their whole lives - they were bought this spring at TSC. I feel bad for the five that are still there :(

Ugh, those poor ducks! I'm so glad that you could save at least two of them.

I get that they didn't know much about ducks, but WHY in the world would you even have them if you don't care to find out how to successfully raise them? Like really, what's the point? It just makes me mad. If you're going to do something, do it WELL. Or at least learn as you go. And yeah, predators are out there and you can't prevent every loss, but to just not care? That's kind of strange.

Also, what IS chicken wire good for? I've never seen an application where it's useful.

I've become quite the fan of eating them. I think they just taste like a richer chicken egg. Even though they are a decent size I still have been eating 3-4 per meal.
I find the duck eggs more filling and rich as well. I can only eat 2.. And I feel full longer than I do when I eat chicken eggs.
Chicken eggs are bland to me now. I'm totally converted.
