If I came across a bear on a walk with the dogs I would be the one in flight!! And the dogs may have to try their best to keep up!!

Well we’ve come upon a few and my med size dog got chased but the bear stopped before it got too close to us. The next time we were walking up our spring road and our little dachshund started chasing this one and I was screaming for Danny to come back but he just kept on and thankfully that bear ran too. We walked up on a mama an cubs and thank goodness we weren’t close and she took off up the mountain with her 3 cubs. I’d say our guardian angels have been intervening.

we used to have poultry netting on the old run and it was awful. We replaced it with coated welded wire and the new pen has hardware cloth

Baby pigs are fragile...they need heat lights just like baby chicks....(using heat lamps on dux is a waste of money )

Predators will take the baby’s...when young. I assume you are looking at feeder pigs..which are 40 poundish size......a dog, coyote would take them maybe a fisher... pigs grow fast... at around 60-70 pound a they are pretty safe unless you have roaming dogs..

If a chicken is dumb enough to sit on a fence above a hungry pig it might go after it...the chickens will enjoy feeding on the pig poop... I no longer have hogs, if I did I would let the chickens free range with them....and at the risk of being tiresome to someone special....I would feed my pigs dux if I had any!!!

An Electric fence is about the only thing that will hold them... but it has to be built right....so they can’t push dirt over it and short the fence out..

Pigs are a lot of fun...and so yummy....

just know they grow and never stop growing. I have had boars that go over 500 pounds...

The meat of a boat is not edible unless he is castrated months many many months before you butcher him...

Boy pigs should be made into eunuchs at 2-3 weeks....just don’t let mommy pig hear the baby cry....

also and this is no joke!!!!!
Be careful a boar is always dangerous!!!!! Never enter a pen with them without protection and a way out fast!! More farmers have been killed by boats than by bulls!!!!

A sow with babies is more dangerous than a boar!!!

I can't believe you guys can walk around with guns!and its so casual to talk about. Seeing what my husband had to go through to get his licence for rifles was crazy! And we live on a large property with livestock and vermin. To get a hand gun is even harder you have to be very active at the pistol club. Fight for your right guys!

It's so crazy how laws can be so drastically different in different countries, or heck, even different parts of the same country. My husband would not be pleased if he wasn't allowed to own guns anymore. He's always out there trying to track down the illusive raccoon that constantly gets into our trash cans. So far though, Chris - 0, Raccoons - 100.

If there's a country that allows the defending of livestock from hawks, I'd move there.

Hawks and eagles are protected here too. The eagle more so but. Jail time if you are found guilty of killing a wedge tail. Theres a pair that nests around here but they seem to respect the homestead as my territory not theirs. I don't think gun control would work in America, it'd be a mistake. Its only worked here because it was done so early on and people were still honest.

Morning all!

I'm just going to say that reading about pigs has made me rethink adding pigs to our farm in the future. Not sure we eat enough pork to justify the aggravation.

How's everyone doing?

Pigs can be great pets though.. they love belly rubs. When we were kids, Dad refused to let us have horses...

became extremely irate when we rode the milk cows.. it took him about 3 months to figure out we were riding the cows to the barn for milking and not walking them to the barn....

So we started riding the pigs. It was challenging as they would find low branches and try and knock us off their backs...

but these same pigs would follow us around the pasture and be with us whenever we were out there.

Pigs are luvable, friendly animals with the exception of Boars and Sows with a litter... and they don’t smell as bad as a dux...
