They sound like they are in abundance. Is there special traps or just cat traps?
I use a dog proof trap that is targeted for raccoons. It's basically a cylinder with a rat trap style spring. The trigger is at the bottom of the cylinder and must be pulled to activate. A "pull only" trap requires an articulated hand to pull. It's a fur trappers, trap. It's not made for releasing, but it also does not kill, just hold them in place via their paw.

@Muscovy Wunda these are the traps. You need to anchor them or the coon will just steal the trap and I'd imagine have a hard time surviving. I do intend to kill them, but not like that.

This one's not my pic, but this is what happens. It's not gross, or graphic but I'm censoring it in case somebody does find it offensive.

Sounds like a chicken safe trap. Yes please don't shoot yourself over a leaf attack! Do they generally come back same night or are they sly like a fox and wait until a later time?
They'll come back. The only reason it actually ran off was the dogs came running out with me. Normally they only run about 10' and will just watch you. And I don't mean 10' and hide behind something stealthy, I mean they know they're faster than you and just get out of your reach. They are not scared of humans at all, just cautious.

Just what my insomnia needed...visions of Trimurtisan and raccoons dancing in my head 😂 I'll never get back to sleep...

Did it drag the hen off or try to eat it at the coop?
It was eating it right there. It was a 4 week old chick, and momma started screaming which got the dogs going. I got out there right after it started. Poor thing was twitching when I got to it.
