Only down side is having to redo the bedding often enough to keep up with the mess. My ducks pounded woodchips into the mud fairly fastFriends, i have a question, what are you using as ground or bedding in your poultry runs?
When i built my first duck-run last year, i laid down those standard 4" drainage pipes into the ground and covered everything with gravel, large rocks at the bottom and finer gravel on top. It has worked during autumn and winter, but now with rising temperatures and more and more duck-poop accumulating within the gravel the run has started to stink. Also the drainage pipes seem to be clogged - maybe just the holes? - and when it rains, the water is accumulating into smelly mud-puddles. A very unsatisfying situation.
I might be able to secure free wood-chips from my arborist neighbor, if i can figure out a way to haul those home. The idea is to rip the whole floor out of the run and lay down ½ to a foot of wood chips. When those wood-chips are soaked in poop and water and start to rot, i can shovel them out onto the compost, increasing the amount of compost i produce, and put down new wood-chips…
The ground under the run is yellow loam with plenty of rocks in between and has the same drainage capabilities as marine-grade concrete…
A toothbrush and tooth paste works well.Okay does anyone in here show/have shown chickens? I have questions about cleaning the leg scales. I can not find details on how to do it anywhere but the enthusiasts I know here all say clean them with tooth pick. Is this just and Aussie thing?
