I have used Lidocain on grown-up ducks in the past without any problems, but you are correct, that is a one day old duckling…
Anyways, i have to choose between two equally bad looking alternatives:
  1. No pain medication and risking that the little one pecks or tears open those blisters, which increase the likeliness of an inflammation of the whole foot
  2. Use pain medication and the duckling leaves those blisters alone
Without the pain-medication the duckling is definitely in pain and is permanently pecking and scratching on those blisters. With the pain medication it is calm and sleepy...
There is the thread »Fact or Fiction? "Caine" and Poultry« here at BYC where @casportpony did some research about pain medications and poultry. Very similar to the myth of »do not feed medicated chick-starter to ducklings«.
The pain medication used in the CVS brand of Antibioticn Cream + Painkiller is Pramoxine.
Sorry Frank, I didn't realize this. I hope all works out well for the little fella. It sounds like he will be alright.

Thanks so much Miss Lydia for sharing my new babies. I think the one is a Mallard Runner if there is such a thing as they were supposed to be Runners from Hoover's Hatchery. It only has the one eye stripe and is tiny. I picked two of the smallest ones wanting to get girls but time will tell. I never caught any more culprits in my traps last night but will leave them set for another week to make sure. I think the one that we got was the predator that killed my last two babies.

Hiya quack shack folk!
We finially got ourselves, the three dogs and 35 dux moved to the country 🤪
We didn't have internet until yesterday which made it nearly impossible to post besides being busy every spare minute still finishing the inside of of our house while living in it.
My new internet is fiberoptic and i can't believe how fast it is!

Sadly we could not move the duck palace with us so we bought a temporary aviary for the calls. Hopefully we can build something more secure before winter.
They are happy in there though, and have also been enjoying some free range time.
Photo bomb ahead!

This was the first day the calls got free range time. I was unsure how Mason would react to the little ones being out, I've always trained him to keep them in while i was choring. I'd leash him near the palace door and his job was to keep them from escaping.

I made sure he watched me let them out and kept him leased for a while until i was sure he wouldn't get agitated. He was confused at first but then he was fine with it.
The ducks were scared to venture far at first but finially started making laps around the Cayuga pen. 🤣
Mason did not think they should be getting that far from safety, He went and flopped down right where they had been taking their walk.
I thought the ducks were gonna walk right over to him for a minute. 🤣

Also, all three of the Cayugas i hatched are girls! They are duckenagers now and want nothing to do with me or the hound.
They've had it rough trying to integrate as my adult Cayugas have been molting and are grumpy as sin.
For some reason the hound thinks those three belong to HIM. He wants them to play with him sooo bad but of course he moves too fast for them so they get scared.
I do have to correct him frequently when they are out. Why he only bothers those three I do not know. He doesn't attack them or anything he just wants to herd them around and prance around them which is not appreciated.
But when the bigger ducks get to chasing them or hurting them he's on it.. barking at the fence and it actually does break it up. So it's been kinda good.
