Its sunny now, but in the early morning hours there was a thick ice-mist here and it was lousy cold…

Your prayers have been answered for now anyway. I have tried so many times to get here and I could but that would be it I could not post or it would look like a script instead of normal BYC but today it’s working. Still no WiFi but by some miracle I am here. Hopefully that’s a good sign

Frank you are digging all of this up by hand???? With it being so cold here the ground would be frozen until later on today with the temps coming up this week. I wish you had a rototiller to use, that's hard work!

Those bugs are actually called »Japanese Beetles« but that name has turned out to be "impolite"… They have no natural predators her - except for the ducks and chickens so they multiply like crazy and damage the young leaves of fruit trees like peach and plum.

Yes, anything infested with diseases be properly destroyed.

The proper Japanese beetle is Popillia japonica, it's not exactly the same - but yes I can believe that the end result can be the same or at least similar.

Thankfully I haven't noticed the larvae damaging plants in our containers (where we can absolutely always find them at the end of the season). It could be that it's because they only appear at year's end and would do damage the next spring but they don't get the opportunity because we clean up the soil for the next generation of seasonal plants (tomatoes etc).

Last time we held a vote on this the ducks were all in favor of maintaining the annual soil cleanup.

A break from social media can be a good thing. But I'd imagine it has felt pretty lonley at times with it being a struggle to even get messages through or go for supplies and what not.
I don't browse and post as much on byc anymore, but it is still a comfort to be able to come here and "see" all my friends and share dux stories.
Anyway..

No, not digging with my hands! - I use a Spade.
And i also have a decent electric tiller, but the duckies are better: They till, remove bug-larvae and fertilize in one go.
