I had some grey on one and did not know it was bruising. I read to put a pin hole where the bruise is so that it can at least breathe but did not know that so it died, fully developed. I was so sad.

I feel like the elements are against me when it comes to hatching, unknown planned power outages, unplugged incubators, house temp flucuates, every time I hatch duck eggs I then can't use it for 6 months because nothing else will hatch even if I sanitise it

How well I can relate and you are not alone. Our power went out in a bad storm Sunday during the night for 8 hours. I am on day 10 with this little egg but really don't expect it to hatch. Mine will make it to as far as day 18 and then quit. Some even make it to hatch day and die in the shell. Don't feel alone, I am doing it for fun though just to see what type of ducklings I would get out of these small eggs which would have to be Call ducks. It's fun to see them progress but sad when they don't make it all the way.

We are now in Day 25 and I can maybe see bumps on 2 of the eggs. From previous rounds I would say that tomorrow it gets interesting.

I hope that you have a normal hatch and that they hatch out correctly in the air sac. I don't know why some of mine would be turned wrong inside the egg and bruise the shell as they were trying to pip in the wrong place. I know now to put a pin hole where the bruise is so that they can breathe.

The first attempted external pips appeared yesterday afternoon but there has been hardly any progress since except one egg that managed to chip off a little of the shell.

Following our experience with last year's Khaki eggs, we intervened to make very small emergency holes in all of the eggs that have attempted a pip.

Our experience has been that it absolutely makes a difference and that without human help many Khakis would not hatch successfully. Since WH are descended from Khakis and since it is already Day 26 (our Khakis would have hatched on 26-27) we decided to step in.

The one that had managed to chip off some of the shell has done it in a place very much away from the air sac! - very strange. So we moved very carefully with that one.

One egg had a super hard shell but did attempt to pip so we made a hole there even though it was hard to be brutal and gentle at the same time.

Two of the eggs were not showing any signs of external pipping so we didn't attempt to make a hole either.

We can hear the duckling in the "strangely placed hole" egg chirping.

Humidity in the incubators is 75% . The automatic pump did not make it over 71% so i just flooded the chamber manually.

In the late night and in the morning we'll check again.

So happy that you made the holes for the ones that have made so much progress. That was the mistake I made when I saw the bruising on the shell of mine years ago. I did not know what it was. I would have made a hole if I had of. Some times they get malpositioned and have a hard time making it out. At least now it can breathe. Good luck with your hatch!!!

Frank do you make a hole in the shell and membrane or only the shell. My last egg that made the hole in only day 18 was only in the shell. I ended up making a small hole in the membrane but there was no way it was going to make it. I still have no idea how it managed to make the pip in the shell so early when it was beneath all of that yolk and blood vessels.
