Weeds are not all bad... https://savoursoilpermaculture.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/weeds_guardians_of_the_soil.pdf"smother" something into that soil would require explosives
.
I have started to cover that area with woodchips, but its a slow process and the weeds enjoy the new soil too much.
I grow some "weeds" on purpose as cover crop and dig them under in early spring. But what we got here over the last couple of years is just bad, its a grass like plant with small purple flowers that outgrows everything. The grass is dying due to drought that stuff takes over and covers everything. I forgot the name it is some invasive species from central Asia, almost impossible to eradicateā¦

That's what I usually do for a quick ID of plants.Do you have a photo? Could run Google lens on it.
Is it this one?Do you have a photo? Could run Google lens on it.
I don't have a photo, and yes Google Lens identified it as one of the most invasive weeds, worse than Kudzu. It has take over most of my "gras" around the house, because i stopped mowing due to drought conditions. And now, i assume it has died because we had the first frost this night...Do you have a photo? Nope, i cannot open the link from here, but i will ask Lens again this afternoon...
Know this plant oh so well oh so well sometimes known as smartweed, and if it has the thumb prints on the leaves, it is ladies thumb - which I see on yours which mine also have and is therefore a medicinal leaf good to make tea with even known to shrink cancer tumors ā¦Okay, Lens and Gemini were able to identify the weed as Ā»Persicaria longisetaĀ«, in invasive species from Asia.
Utterly useless here, offers noting to the bees or the ducks, not even useful as bedding...It died during the first frost but managed to suppress the grass and everything else while it was growing, now there are bald spots in my pasture where the soil will be eroded away.
Gemini recommended mowing, mowing and mowing again to prevent it from developing flowers and seeds. I likely have infested all of my land by using the "grass" cuttings as mulch this year. Next year i will have to collect all the cuttings, thoroughly dry them and then burn it to destroy all seeds. At least i can use the ashes as fertilizer.
This is what this plant looks like:

Be aware of this plant, it spreads like wildfire during a drought!
