I have not attempted to collect the seeds, but as it is from the wider buckwheat family, those may turn out to be a tasty addition to my self-baked bread…

It seems this plant is also called redshank or redleg - persicaria maculosa.

I think it's native to our part of the world... Yes:

"It is widespread across Eurasia from Iceland south to Portugal and east to Japan. It is also present as an introduced and invasive species in North America".

... But it's not THAT crazy for us, I sometimes see a couple growing and it's not at all the case that when I look next there's going to be huge swaths of it.
