To the person who dumped 40 pekins on the side of the road..

Thank you for taking the time & effort to save those sweet ducks. Love the Pic's. They do look very content in that last pic.

I will be looking forward to updates.

I finally got a good count and we had somewhere between 54-56. Now that ParrotChick has taken 3, we have three less than that.

They have gone through 2 bags of feed since they've been there.. Piggy little ducks they are. And they HATE going to bed! It was impossible to herd them, especially since they can't fly/jump well like our chickens, so they couldn't figure out how to get in. It was probably a funny sight for our neighbors.

Tomorrow, we will be sending some of them to a farm near us as egglaying ducks. I thought they were all girls minus one because one had a drake feather and forgot about voice sexing because the quacks overpower the other voices.. But apparently we probably have some boys too who haven't gotten their drake feathers in. I had no idea that could happen.

Anyways! They had a good day. I went out and tanned with them for some time but my goose who got kicked out of the harem interrupted us. She was soooo intent on convincing the ducks that they were her children or her friends.. They were NOT taking it. So anyways.. PICTURES!

Enjoying some water.

They LOVE getting sprinkled with the hose. It's big big fun for them.

And here is our intruder, Lonely Heart (Gilderoy Lockhart, for those HP fans out there).. She wanted them to love her SO MUCH, but they were not having it. She finally left them alone and went dejected to the other side of our property (it's split by a stream).

This is her yelling, "Come to meeeee, my children!"

And this is her wondering why they don't love her.

Here is the picture I used to count them.. That's a lotta ducks.

Awwww. They look so happy. I love the pic with the goose. Looks like a couple of us from St. Mary's County are getting together to come get some from ya. I'm excited!

Wow! You are amazing to take on that adventure! Thumbs up to you and those who helped you! I could adopt a few girls if you end on getting a duckpool set up coming south- I am in Western NC. Would come right over if I lived closer. I LOVE the picture of them all in the car- I get a lot of trouble with my husband for taking my goat to school in the back of my station wagon every now and then...

Good job!

I brought the three delightful duckies (2 girls and a boy) home to my 1/4 acre fenced in "free range" area around sunset. They immediately left the dog crate and waddled off like they know exactly where they were going. I already have two distinct "cliques" of ducks: the five young (7 weeks) Runners and Pekins, and the three older (~14 month old) Pekins who are apparently scared of the younger set. (This doesn't include the two Muscovies that get no respect and thus have their own space). They are only united in their disgust of the new baby emu interloper. And now 3 newbies arrive, who only want to follow them around. The new ones can't understand why all these other ducks keep running away as they're used to other white ducks being family and sticking together. So they just follow along. I put the new three and the older three together in the pen for the night since it was late (the teenagers have their own housing for now). The Queen, ie the older female, has let loose a splew of duckie expletives and has a running duckalogue on her opinions of these trespassers in HER pen. It's so cute when ducks talk amongst themselves about the events of the day.

For all they've been through, these ducks are pretty friendly. It's disappointing my spoiled brats couldn't show a little more graciousness. But I think they'll come around tomorrow. The newbies were really enjoying drinking from the kiddie pools, so I imagine there will be a lot of discussion around the water cooler.

Thanks again for rescuing all those quackers. I wish I had space for more and of course I ended up with more than I had planned :>

PS we got in about 40 birds from the side of the road a couple weeks ago. Ours were nicely packaged in disgusting small crates though. Someone bought at the auction went to the flea market sold them and then left what didnt sell. A few died since it was 100 degrees here when your not inside a mountian dew box. Most of them have bounced back. Anyway it never suprises me what people will do.

Your an amazing person for stopping to pick them up. Very few people would make that effort. Your an angel to the ducks.
