Turkey Talk for 2014

If you all were going to sell fertile turkey eggs what is a price you go with? I was thinking $3 or $4 per egg. I have Bourbon Reds.

Okay, so I now have three hatched poults and one that's taking its sweet time and is only just externally pipped. They are all so sweet! The are completely yellow except for a little patch on their backs where the tip of the fluff is jsut barely frosted with black. They are royal palm/sweetgrass crosses and I am so curious to see what they will look like when they feather in.

I find that on BYC most people will not pay more than $3 per egg plus shipping. IT doesn't pay for the feed. So I am cutting back on my stock. . . .

Few buyers compared to chicken eggs, too.

I would look on eBay and see what turkey eggs are selling for. I totally agree that some of our "farm products" just don't bring enough $$. People are always looking for a bargain of course but hatching eggs can be a false bargain, since so many of them you get don't hatch, or are infertile, or not what the seller said they would be. If I didn't have to help pay for feed with sales, I probably wouldn't sell because it is just so frustrating, at least with buyers on CL

IT is very unfortunate that so many egg sellers are not reputable-- I value my reputation on BYC and always try to do right by my cusotmers. BUt even I cant predict the smashed boxes by the USPS and to replace those eggs eats up more that the profit of the first batch. Shipped eggs are always a risk and those new to hatching are not fully aware of this.

I did have one customer hatch 7 out of 7 egggs this year!!! That record witll stand for a long time. lol

Heard the hen talking-- she never talks. Pushed her aside enough to see 2 poults!! Of course other hen is off the eggs and those are getting cold-- I don't have much hopes for her eggs . . . .

I see the value in marking the sucessfull hens. THey are worth pots of gold. OR at least the electric bill to brood them!! lol

Unfortunately especially on eBay there are many egg sellers that are illegally shipping eggs across state lines. Some of those people just don't know any better and do not make any attempt to learn what the laws are for the states that they are shipping eggs to. The minimum requirement for most states is either NPIP certification or a veterinary certificate of health of the flock. Some states also require the recipient to first get an import permit before bringing any hatching eggs into their state. I know that Texas is one of the states that requires an import permit.

When the hen stops hissing at me and starts talking it is a very good sign that there are babies present.
