This is not actually true- at least in my experience. Shooting the squirrels in my yard does have a noticeable affect on the number of squirrels that frequent my yard. They do come back, but every year it only takes me shooting a few for them to get the idea. So the occasional "thinning of the herd" so to speak actually does work just fine. I can't completely prevent them access to what they're after. I can put away feed, but I free range my chickens all day, so I have to leave the coop open for them to be able to lay or eat. I haven't found any way to let my chickens have free choice, but not the woodland creatures, other than to eliminate them. If my neighbors wouldn't feed the squirrels so much, there wouldn't be nearly as many as there are anyway. I'm simply having to respond to an unnatural situation created by my neighbors feeding the squirrels. To the OP I say, don't feel bad about doing what's necessary to keep your home free of pests.
