Fantastic article! I actually just acquired three geese, and this article answers so many of my questions - and then some! It can be overwhelming to search for this info, and I appreciate that not only all the basics have been addressed, but also that you included links to other articles or sites that have further information. Thank you for this info! Very, very informative!

Thanks for this! You explained the steps and the "whys" very well! I have a special needs chicken who doesn't have use of one leg, so her claws on that foot don't get worn down naturally. I worry about bleeding, so the info about the blood line is particularly helpful. Thanks! Good info as always!

I told my husband I don't really have 8 chickens. This proves that I only have 1/2 of a chicken!

Seriously, though... this is a clever and well-written explanation of chicken math. Love it, love it, love it! And the quiz - GENIUS!!! Thank you!

Don't forget to round up... he may catch on if you say you have 1/2 chicken. Go with 1 to be safe. ;D

Thank you for posting this! I am rather new to chickens, and I have never hatched my own eggs. This is truly fantastic! It's such a miraculous process, and you have captured all aspects of it beautifully. The addition of videos was an unexpected treat.

Now I want to hatch some eggs....

This is probably the most thorough, comprehensive article about house first few weeks that I've seen. Very well done, and the photos really help the reader understand the needs of chicks. I feel as though this compiles the info normally addressed by several articles. Thank you for putting it all together in one easy to read article!

I know you say the pictures aren't in any particular order, but they tell the story well. The pictures really show how you pieced the coop together and gave me some ideas how to renovate my coop! Thank you for sharing, and good job on your coop!
This was very informative for me (a relatively new chicken owner). It is interesting to see all of the exceptions to the supposed "rules."

This is a great coop! Lots of ventilation, nice fenced run covered in netting, and adorable "extras!" I love how you included pictures of your old coop vs your new coop. I can see a lot of BYC influence in there, and I'm sure the Egg Song Factory will pass on that inspiration to others. Very well done!

Oh wow my coop got featured!

Yes there's a lot of BYC influence. I don't think the new coop would've come out nearly the same without it, from amount of ventilation to the litter used. I'm glad someone urged me to photograph both old and new coops together before the old one was removed, because it really does illustrate the difference between what I thought I knew going in, and what I've learned in the 2 years since then.

I really enjoyed reading over your methodology and the results. The results are surprising - especially for some of the more "wives tale" type tests. Your graphs were very helpful and made comparing the results simple. I wonder what would happen with a larger number of chicks...

Really a great job and a great write up!

Not to worry, more chicks are coming! I intend to add to this article each time I hatch or buy chicks, so the numbers should continue to get larger and larger!

Common sense advice for backyard flock keepers! We have all heard/read stories where angry neighbors led to serious problems. Following this advice would go a long way toward preventing feuds.

But I think you should shareyour love of chickens with the world! I've converted co-workers by doing so. A friend is building her coop soon!

Thanks for these reminders!

Thank you for this article - reflector the pics that allow for comparison. I am anxiously awaiting eggs from my almost 20 week old pullets, and after reading your article, I realized my girls' combs are not nearly as red and ready as I thought they might be. :)
