One of my hens has been sickly. Think she's egg bound but need opinion. Her belly is huge to the point she can barely walk. I've had her separate for about 3 weeks. Seems to get a little smaller and then so big she can't walk. Egg bound? What can I do? She is older and is a...
Have a friend that has a white leghorn that lays really large eggs, which have double yolks. So my question is this - as a fertile egg, will it hatch and will there be one or two chicks? Just wondered! Thanks.....Janet
posted last week a problem with Martha the BR. Really favoring left leg but can't see anything wrong. Crop fills OK but notice her stomach is really large. Not moving around much, just sitting. Any ideas. Almost like her stomach is getting in the way of her legs moving
One of my BR, Martha, started limping on one leg several weeks ago. At first thought it was a sprain. Have had her in separate cage for a week and finally the sun came out and I sat her outside. Still no better, so as I took her out and examined, red bugs - mites crawling about 2" below her...
If you have a roo that is RIR and a hen that is Maran (known for the chocolate colored eggs) will the egg color remain dark or more red? Know what the chick would look like - unknown. Question is the egg color. Posted this on homesteadingtoday and thought I would ask you experts. I think the...

Over a month ago I posted about a wound I found on one of my hens that was infested with live maggots. The wound was about 1" below her vent. Thanks to everyone's reply, thought I got rid of maggots. However, she's still not good. Wound has healed but she is basically lifeless most of the...
I'm using wood shavings in my nesting boxes (ran out of straw). Seems to be working good. Can cedar shavings be used? I know it helps getting rid of pest, i.e. fleas. What about lice? Will the smell keep them from using boxes with cedar shavings? Any direction on this - thanks alot!
Just noticed Bobbie (BR) walking funny. Looked like she had pasty butt, but when I caught her and looked - YUK looked like little maggots below where she poops. Had chickens for many years but never noticed the hole where the egg comes out. They are either in the "egg hole" or it's a sore...
I just purchased two Black Copper Marans. Have had them about 4 days and haven't been accepted by the other girls yet. But they are laying. However, their eggs aren't chocolate brown! They are a light brown. Could this be from stress?

I throw straw under my roost. The house has a concrete slab. So once a week or so, I rake the wet poo/straw to the side and add new straw. When dry, I gather up and put in feed bags for my garden. Since straw/hay is hard to decompose, this year I've spread straw/poo all around my plants...
My rooster, Ernie hasn't acted like he felt bad, but yesterday I caught him and his waddle was very warm and had matter in his left eye. Today that eye has foamy bubbles. What's up? Anyone know?
This is sickening and the first time I've seen this. I boiled an egg for tuna salad and as I was dicing it up, I notice something brown. It was a small beetle looking bug that was in the egg white? How in the world did this happen? I wormed them back in the winter and have seen worms in...
My 2 y/o buff was sitting on floor of house night before. Last night, she was still there. I was gone yesterday, so didn't notice if she was in run. Last night, still on floor. Placed her in nesting box. This morning sat her down and she can't walk, looks like leg problem. Possibly could...
My hens won't eat oyster shells. Some eggs are soooo thin that when another hen tries to lay in box, just sitting breaks the eggs. Any suggestions on how to get harder shells?
A couple of weeks ago I posted my experiment to get the girls to lay. What I did was I released them into a large fenced yard in the morning - no feed or very little and mainly laying pellets. At night, put them back in their fenced pen with house and fed them mainly laying pellets and...
I have a mixed bantam/buff that I just took off nest to break her from sitting. When she pooped, there was a large "tape" type worm in her poop. Anyone know best way to worm chickens?
I've had a huge problem with egg production. It was down to nothing. I let them out of their fairly large fenced pen into a very large fenced backyard. I placed a 25w light in their house 24/7 (since some were still on roost at 11am.) and didn't feed them until later afternoon when I put them...
