Ok. I have a dozen shipped Silkie eggs to pick up at the PO today. I have a broody EE hen right now who has never hatched a clutch, but she is very sweet and manageable. I have wonderful success hatching my own eggs, but not so great with the Silkie eggs. Should I set these eggs with the broody...
Well, after 2 years of trying to hatch shipped eggs, I finally have a Silkie!! It is 10 weeks old this weekend, and just adorable. At least I think it is. Everyone else at the house says it's the ugliest chicken they have ever seen. They have no sense of beauty.
Yep, it's finally happened. I'm the proud mama of 2 of the prettiest balls of fluff I have ever seen! This was my 4th attempt at hatching out shipped Silkie eggs. Out of the 8 I had two early quitters. 6 made it to lockdown. Still have 4 in the bator. Today is day 22, so I haven't given up on...
Gonna have at least a dozen eggs going in on Sunday. So far I have 8 bearded splash Silkie, 3 of my EE's, and 1 brown leghorn mix. Hopefully my 3 laying EE's will add a few more by then. UPDATE: Five chics have hatched so far! All three EEs and two Silkies. Here's a couple pics of...
I called the PO at 7:02 this morning--no eggs yet, the truck should be there around 7:45. I'm on pins and needles. Got my fingers crossed hoping the eggs are ok.
What are your arguments for or against adding wheat to your chicken feed? Are there any benefits to it? Is it harmful in any way? Have any of you tried it?
I am thinking of getting some turkeys to raise in the spring. I need lots of advice and info on the do's and don'ts concerning turkey raising. Should they be separate from the chickens? If I decide to get them, I will start off with only 6. How much space will they need? Should the roosts be any...
Well, I have been reading anything and everything I can find about quail. I am thinking maybe mine are manchurian golds? I have a few with odd colored heads, tho. I don't know where the dark heads are coming from. My fertility rate is not very good right now. Out of 81 eggs I had set, I had to...
This is the thing: My rooster died back in July. Well, my F-I-L thought he'd get me another one, so he let all his 'buddies' know we were looking for a mature rooster. One of them drove up Friday nite with this rooster in a box. Well, it was evening time, which I thought was a good thing as far...
Okay, here's the deal. Power went out for about 2 hours during the evening of Day 18.... I locked down that morning. Another outage for a couple more hours during day 19. Today is day 25.....no pips that I can see....haven't heard any internal peeping like in my other hatches. I'm scared to...
Are soybeans toxic to chickens. I've read they have to be boiled, baked, somehow cooked to get toxins out...Is this true? I've had farmers tell me they scoop up excess soybeans and feed them to chickens, cows, pigs...whatever, and no adverse effects. My pa-in-law is convinced they will not...
Ok, these two look a lot alike, so I'll try and get all the pics of one up top and the other down below.
Here's one:
Here's the other:
Both of them together (couldn't get a better pic, sorry):
Oops, I had wrong age, lol. They're 9 wks
Okay, I just ran out and took some more pics of the first batch I ever incubated. All 15 are thriving and doing very well. I know 8 are definitely roos and think maybe 2 more in the bunch also. I will be keeping the best one of the roos that look like Columbo.
Here are the 7 that I am pretty...
Just had to show her off, lol. I think she's the prettiest out of my first batch hatched. Dad was the Columbian Wyandotte, mom is my EE. Ain't she pretty???
Oh, and she is 10 weeks old now.
I knew my rooster was perfect for us, but I had no idea what a treasure he was til he was gone. I lost him this past Sunday, he was my only breeding rooster. He was a Columbian Wyandotte. I immediately started checking into finding a replacement. After a wonderful 2 years with him, I knew I...
I incubated my first batch of quail eggs back in June, so they'll be 7 weeks old Saturday, August 7th. One of them laid an egg today. This is so exciting, bringing life into the world, and then being able to watch them grow, and then AN EGG!!!!!!
The next day I separated my roos from my...
Well, I lost my rooster, Columbo, yesterday. The only mature roo I had! He was wonderful, took great care of his hens. Wonderful producer. I am SO glad I had been incubating as many eggs as possible the last past few months. Over half of his chics have inherited his looks, demeanor, and...
Okay, here's a few new pics of my first two hatches. The older ones (larger flock) were hatched in May, and the younger five were hatched in June. I'm really liking the coloring of 4 of the second hatch. Two of those 4 are Col. Wyandotte/EE cross, the other 2 are Col.Wyandotte/BR cross. Here...
