I have 17 hens. I'm getting 1-2 eggs/day. The rest still aren't laying. I know it's been a rough winter, but this is ridiculous! Those are some expensive eggs!
I have a mixed flock. I had 4 polish that I got in a batch of assorted rare pullets from Meyers last spring, but they all passed this winter. It has been brutally cold and snowy. All the other birds seem fine, Could it be just too cold for Polish?
I'm out of eggs. I have 12 chickens and have only gotten 6 eggs in the last week- which was dinner. Slackers. Only one chicken is laying.
I put a light in the coop for 2 extra hours a day a few days ago... hopefully that works soon.
I found bits of eggshell in one of our nestboxes today. This afternoon DH found some wet eggwhite in another nestbox.
We obviously have at least one eggeater.
Now what?
I have 12 hens. They are about 2 years old. We've gotten no eggs in at least a month. They went into a hard molt in October, and nothing since.
I wonder if I have an egg eater amongst them.. but I have not so much as heard an egg song.
i know production decreases in the fall/winter, but...
OK, so Iposted a pic of my chicken's foot a couple weeks ago, and it was bumblefoot, so I was directed to a thread about lancing and bandaging it. I did. It looked good, like it was healing...
I just checked her foot.
It's back.
Now what?
So.. I have 12 chickens.
Three 2009 hens- not laying well right now.. one coming out of molt, 2 going into molt.
My 9 spring 2010 pullets- 5 laying, 4 still freeloading.
I get a little over 2 doz/week right now...
I had a couple extra dozen two weeks ago.
I posted on facebook if...
This is Wilma- 1 year old EE hen. She is currently molting... looks terrible... I picked her up to check her out and found this:
She is getting around fine, but her foot is swollen.... ?
She is kept in a good sized coop/run setup.. no walking on wire or anything....
So what is it, and...
We got 3 "rare marans" from Meyers in April.
Misty- Blue Splash maran laid her first egg.. and it's dark!
Yay!
Snow- the "white Maran" started laying last week- nice bird.. but I don't think she is really a maran- here she is and her first egg (light brown) on lower right. The other 3...
This is Oddball.
She was supposed to be a black copper Marans from Meyer Hatchery's "rare marans collection"
Well.. she might be part BCM.
She is a strange chicken.
She is smaller than my other chickens, skittish, white earlobes??? Poofy head feathers, and look at that comb!
I haven't getten an egg from one of my EE's since last tuesday...
She seems healthy. Good weight. I don't think she's eggbound. I've looked around.. it's possible she is hiding them somewhere, but I haven't found them....
Is it normal to just randomly take a break from laying?
This is supposed to be a BCM from Meyer... it isn't. It has white earlobes and a funny crest like a spitz or polish snuck in the maran pen...?... What is it....? I think I might name it mystery.
12 weeks old
has a redder face and bigger comb..
and is lighter in color....
but no saddle feathers that I can see, and body is sort of round.... doesn't stand upright light a roo...
I am confused.
We have a broody that has been living in a dog crate in the run for the last few weeks with her chicks- now 3 weeks old.
The dog crate is inside a baby XT gate.
Yesterday the chicks got out of the gate and were running with the big girls. I watched them. The other big girls didn't bother...
my broody hen has 6 chicks, almost three weeks old. This morning she laid an egg. She still gathers the chicks at night and sleeps with them in her nest box, but in the morning she jumps out of the chick kennel and hangs with the big girls. Does this mean she's just about done being mother hen?
She isn't hurting them, but for the most part she is just sitting on her nest watching them. Is that normal? They have been running all over the crate eating, drinking, etc while she sits on the nest and watches....
This is a hatchery bird..
I know what it is supposed to be.. but it sure doesn't look like that...
So what do you folks think it is?
as a new chick-
now at 4 1/2 weeks
Sorry about the lousy pics.. she wouldn't stay still:/
