A few days ago I posted about finding babies under my broody hen...Well, here they are!
We moved them from the community coop into her own private pen late on the second night after 3 had hatched but still with one egg to go. She did fine and is a VERY protective momma! But she didn't finish the...
A few days ago I posted about finding babies under my broody hen...Well, here they are!

Just after she came off the nest...
Broody momma has been sitting for several weeks. We marked the 4 eggs she seemed so intent on, just to see... WELL, this morning we found one chick and another of the eggs is cheeping. Didn't hang around to check the other 2 eggs because momma seemed agitated.
We had planned to move momma from...
Well, we survived the hurricane unscathed for the most part. I lost a dogwood tree and one of the shrubs in my flower bed, but nothing more. We didn't lose power and our Dish Network never faltered. Thanks for all the prayers and good thoughts.
Here are a few photos...
The big coop survived...
Well, we are prepared about as good as we can be. Earl is nearly upon us. We are under mandatory evacuation orders, but we are staying put. It is 6pm and we've been told to expect the worst between 7pm tonight and noon tomorrow. So far we have only light wind gusts, but the surf is really kicked...
Our chickens are 15 weeks old now and have been free ranging in the yard for at least half that time. Eight of the 10 roos will be butchered today.
How long should we hold them in the fridge before cooking? Should they be frozen first?
What is the best way to cook them? Crock-pot, roasting...
My Mother's Day babies are all grown up now. We have identified 10 of the 24 as cockrels (huge combs, saddle feathers, and they CROW). Tomorrow our friend is coming over to help with processing.
We are thinking of keeping 2 roos, but wonder if that will leave too few hens per roo. We already...
We have been letting our 11 week old flock out of the coop and run to wander the yard a bit lately. Last night just before dusk we went out to put everyone to bed as usual and one of the babies had decided to go to bed with our 5 free range girls. The older girls didn't seem the least bit...
I have 24 chicks (8 weeks old) and many look very similar. We have come up with several ways to mark them so we can identify them, but most have drawbacks that caused us to abandon the idea, ie zip ties with numbers written on them--might tighten up accidentally and cause injury to the legs, or...
I've read so many posts about breaking broody hens by various methods. WHY? What's wrong with a hen going broody? I haven't read any posts saying it's unhealthy. In fact, isn't it normal? What is the benefit of breaking her?
Except for a few weeks with one less egg at the end of the day I...
One of my free range hens, I was told she was a black sex link, has been sitting in the nest box for the past several days. Yesterday, and the day before, she threw an absolute hissy fit when we reached under her to check for eggs. I didn't consider that she might be broody until I went out to...
I just thought I'd share this since there are two threads here about fire ants.
Fire ants don't bite, they sting! and it HURTS like, well, FIRE. We have had several run-in's with the devil things and have discovered that a bleach and water solution, used within the first few minutes, takes the...
Update added at 9:45am -- I am not believing this! After a short nap DH was sitting on the porch telling his father of our night, and looking up into the tree , when he realized there was another raccoon up there! Death count now stands at 5 raccoons!
We (DH, DDx2, DD's BF, BFF, and myself)...
I finally got a picture of my daughter in her costume. Imagine having to wear this in 90 degree heat! Both of our daughters wear these costumes 6 nights a week. They consist of a bum roll (makes your butt look bigger), petticoat, skirt, apron, blouse, bodice and a wool cape. In some scenes they...
Over the past several days I have been tortured every time I go into my back yard. Something is eating me alive. I did get bit by yellow flies yesterday and the day before, but I saw them. Last night and again this morning I went out and within a few minutes was broke out in welts and itching...
Is 5 weeks too young? DH swears one of my little roos was trying to this morning. Sounded muffled, but still sounded like a crow to him.
If he is starting to crow, does this mean he is likely to be a better roo than the others? I'm only going to keep 2 roos. Should he be one of the two?
Most people think of little animals or figures when the hear the word, but I like geometric pieces. Most of the pieces I fold require 12, 24, or 36 pieces of paper. My favorites are the interlocking boxes.
The fact that they are pestering me and not my chickens doesn't make them any less pests, does it? Actually I'd say they aren't pests as much as they are predators!
Please, somebody has to have some ideas on how to get rid of them from the yard and how to treat bites! I was only out in the...
