    Day 22 and Movement Stopped

I have 2 runner eggs in a Little Giant Incubator, and they had been moving a lot since developing until Day 20. I can no longer see any movement when candling. This is bad, right? Is there anyway for me to tell if they are alive?

    Two Baby Quail newly-hatched w/problem

I have just hatched 16 Coturnix, and 14 of them are doing well. They started hatching Sunday evening, and the last two to hatch hatched Tuesday. Those last two are not well. I think that they may have wry neck, but I wasn't sure if they can be born that way. Can they? These are not able...

Easter Chicks Grown Up -- what are they?

My Easter hatch of chicks have grown up, and it seems I have a lot of roosters. I have 6 Black Copper Marans and 4 are roosters. I have 5 Buff Orpingtons, and I think 4 are roosters. I have three mutt white chickens, and I think all three are roosters! I am not sure about the Easter...

    Easter chicks -- updated!

I put 25 eggs in the incubator several weeks ago, and over Easter weekend, 21 hatched! I have 6 black copper Marans, 8 buff Orpingtons, and 7 Ameraucanas (maybe Easter Eggers -- I am not sure). I just wanted to share their pictures!

    Chick still attached

I had 21 eggs hatch between Friday night and early this afternoon. I am so happy that 21 out of 25 hatched, because my last batch wasn't so successful. However, number 21 seems different than the others. This little black copper Maran is still attached to it's egg and lies on its back...

What breed and gender? (UPDATED WITH CURRENT PICS -- YET AGAIN!)

I have four chicks that my broody Leghorn, Stewellen, hatched on July 1. The eggs were not hers; I bought fertile ones. I know that one chick is a Polish tophat and two are Rhode Island Reds (or some variation thereof), but I have a gray mystery chick. Can anyone tell me what breed this gray...

    Easter Eggers -- who crowed?

Yesterday evening, I heard a sound that made my blood chill. Only those who have been terrorized by a rooster would understand, but I'll bet a few of you here know that feeling. Anyway, I have 6 Easter Egger Pullets who are about 12-14 weeks old. For a week or so, I have been suspicious of a...

New hatch --- what are they?

I bought fertile eggs for my broody leghorn, and they hatched Friday. We have three red chicks: one with chipmunk strips, one with light stripes and one with very faint stripes. We also have a Polish Tophat and another gray chick. The gray chick and the red ones were supposed to be Rhode...

    Newly-hatched chick with eyes closed

My broody Leghorn just hatched 6 eggs that I bought for her three weeks ago. The Polish Tophat egg appeared to have a Polish Tophat chick in it. But the 5 little brown Rhode Island Red eggs had a couple of surprises. Three of the eggs produced chicks that are some shade of red, but two of...

    Americauna or Easter Egger

I have six of these pretty pullets which were sold to me as Americaunas. Are they Americaunas or Easter Eggers? I am confused about the difference. I am happy either way; I just want to call them by the right name.

UPDATEDw/PIC: Two new chicks....any idea what breed?

My daughter's friend gave her two chicks, and she thinks one of them is a barred rock. We have no idea about the other....any ideas from the chicken experts at BYC?

    Two Newest Chicks

My daughters and I hatched two chicks nearly two weeks ago for a school project. The eggs came from our own Leghorns, and these little ones are getting pretty spoiled being the only two babies! Here are pictures of them....any guesses at the gender? Ruby (we hope!) Ada (more hoping!)

    What to do with Drakes

My fawn and white Runners are 6 weeks old now, and I am almost positive that I have 2 females and 5 drakes. I am going by their voices, and the girls just look girlier. I love them all, but I don't think that keeping so many drakes is going to work for me. I want more females to lay eggs...

My 4.5 week old Indian Runners

My babies are growing so fast! Here they are this morning. All seven are fawn and white like their parents, and I love the way those two colors mix with the yellow down they still have. They still follow me like I am their mama. They will balk if they think I have not let them play in...

    Lame Duckling

One of our 4.5 week old Runner Ducklings is limping and spending a lot more time lying down than the others. It isn't extreme, but it is noticable. I was reading up on bumblefoot and wondered if it could have that. Here are pictures of it's feet. Should I take the duckling to the vet or...

So What Do You All Do With Your Ducks?

I now have 7 three-week-old Indian Runners. They are fawn and whites from the two adults I purchased from Craig's List. I had initally thought I would sell some of them and add some other colors in the spring. My two daughters and I want ALL the colors! LOL! The problem is that I love my...

    After the Brooder

OK, my adorable but piggy runner babies are outgrowing the brooder. I have 7 babies, and they are in a big horse trough as a brooder. However, it is too small to accomodate all the poop! I knew ducklings were messy, but words can't describe the reality. Anyway, I need to move them, and I am...

    Drake and ducklings

I have my seven two-week-old runners outside today. I sat in the grass and they played around my legs. They enjoyed nibbling the grass and my legs, and they knew to stay right by me. After a while, my drake and hen (they are the parents, but they don't know it) waddled by, and Dewey (the...

    Lost a duckling last night

One of our Indian Runner babies died this morning. He was the second one born on Tuesday. He was lying behind the water bottle this morning and making little sounds with his bill closed. I thought he might be choking or that he might be chilled since he wasn't under the light. I was...

    Waterer

My born-this-week Runner ducklings had their first bathtub swim today. Now, every time we got to get them out of the brooder, they are soaked! They somehow manage to spash all of their water out of the waterer. I was very careful to put pebbles in it so that they couldn't drown, and it has...
