Is there a chart with pictures of, labels and descriptions of the different colorings for each type of chicken??
IE - coloring of a light Sussex looks a whole lot like the Columbian Rock.... which can drive a newby (like me) NUTS!
My coop does not have any electricity - since we live in South Texas I am more worried about the Summer heat than anything Winter will throw at us.. so do you think it would be possible to take one of those ornamental windmills and use a pully to power a covered fan inside the coop. It would...
.. someone who at least lived in our state who could teach us the ins and out of showing chickens.. breeding for a better bird and help us to NOT waste money. Am I wishing for the impossible?
..and I am not talking about 4-h or FFA shows for kids. I would like to invest in some show quality chickens, but before making the final choices - want to go to a show or 2.
Can someone please guide me on the simplest way to add a few more hens to my flock? I currently have 5 BR and 1 black hen that was suppose to be a BR.. (stupid feed store..) Anyway - thinking ahead here - I want to add 4 more - buying them as chicks this Spring. They can be the same or...
If you have other animals - ie cows or horses .. you can take that manure mixed with bedding like shavings and put it in a wider bucket or small trough, put the water bowl down inside the trough and surround it with more compost. As the compost breaksdown - it produces heat and will keep the...
I thought it was going to be the eggs.. but I was wrong. The best and actually the most economical part about owning our birds is that I NEVER have to throw away food anymore.. With our children grown and gone, I would increasingly have to throw away bread before we were done with it - or...
How long does it take barred rock hens to lay normal sized eggs? (for them - large) My hens just started laying - but the eggs are tiny.. 1/2 the size I am thinking they should be.
I have a farm blog...and when I have time, I love to browse other blogs. well - here is one of my favorites and this is her post on her completed chicken coop. I have seen a lot of really nice coops, but this is the only one I would call 'ELEGANT'...
Hens that get broody...when you try to collect their eggs.. We are raising our first hens. 6 BR's (well 1 may actually be a black sex link instead of a BR)
Where do you put your nesting boxes in the coop... beside the roosting pole? lower than the pole? on the other side of the coop? Off the ground - if so how high off the ground?
Right now my coop is empty on the inside 7' wide, 8'long with a human door on one side and a chicken door on the...
I went to Canton Texas today to their first Monday's sale and found a couple of vendors selling orig. nesting boxes. I bought a 2 nest unit that I liked ...but they had them as large as 8. Most were priced between 20-40 each..much cheaper than I could have made them for - if I had to buy the...
