I helped a friend out by directing her to the chicken ordinances link, where we discovered that she CAN have chickens where she lives! Yay! But now I am trying to help her find a place to get them. She is in Fremont, CA. Anyone in the area know where she can get some chicks?
Is this normal? I picked this egg up today, it's from my red sexlink that laid the "torpedo" egg the other day. It's wrinkled at the top and has this dark brown spot on the bottom. My hens get plenty of calcium in the form of yogurt and oyster shells.
This is the long egg she laid the...
THIS is the way they repay me. By digging a hole in the corner of the run to lay. So I have to walk ALLLLLLLLLL that 10 feet to get it. Or send my daughter. Poo on them! Snobs!
My hens JUST started laying. Like 4 days ago. My daughter picked this one up this morning right after our brown sexlink hen laid it. It's next to a large egg from the store. It's so long! I've never seen one this long before.
Does anyone else find it sad but slightly amusing that hens LITERALLY can't find their way out of a paper bag? Mine do this ALL THE TIME and I'm like "just walk an extra 2 steps and you will be out!!!" They get "stuck" behind a chair. Or inside their open run. Or behind a small piece of...
My daughter and I went to the feed store a few days ago for supplies, and she spotted the pullets for sale. She absolutely LOVED the brown sex links and was pleading for one. So of course, I got one. Chicken math strikes again, LOL. We took her home and put her with the others and she was...
I bought the wrong stuff today for my chicks (bought a small bag of chick grit thinking it was food) and now the stores are closed. I have no food for them until tomorrow. All I have right now is grit, oyster shells and layer feed.
What can I give them until tomorrow when I can pick up some...
Dog got my other 3 today. I don't know how. My husband searched the entrance to the run/coop and it was all tight. I have NO idea how this happened. My eyes are puffy and sore from crying, I lost my Lion, the one left from my original flock and I just loved her.
I really want to start...
It happened. Again. This time it was my dog. We adopted a dog from the shelter a couple of months ago. He is a doxon/pit mix (?) and he loves to chase the chickens around.
I had the hens loose in their part of the yard with the gate shut. I'm in the garage and I hear this HORRIBLE sound...
But I don't have enough use for it to pay that much money....isn't it awesome?????

It's been really cold here lately (well, California cold=35 degrees at night) and my heat lamp keeps going out on me. I think there is a faulty switch or something, anyway.
Do I need a heat lamp for them? They are in a covered coop and they seem to be fine but I don't want them to freeze at...
My ladies have always been fairly quiet, only clucking when one has a goody and the others are jealous, sometimes at night. But nothing major. All of a sudden they are SUPER loud! Last night my Delaware went to "bed" and was squawking for the others (she's the boss, I guess) and the neighbors...
For the love of Pete. It's a house. For chickens. Where they poop and lay eggs. Why does it have to be so intricate?
My coop was a dog house with one opening and a roost that was a tree branch. Buuuuuut now I've seen all the awesomeness that is on the Coop Page and I must make it the Taj...
Here is the link to my post a couple of weeks ago:

It's been a while, I've been giving her vitamin B, vitamin E, and making sure her feet stay nice and clean. I also gave her some poly-vi-sol, although I don't know if it did any...
Seriously?
Every time I tell someone about my lovely ladies, I get this:
"Really? Ew, I hate chickens"
"I'm afraid of chickens"
"You pick them up? Aren't you scared they're going to peck you?"
Why is everyone afraid of chickens? They are wonderful, sweet, and all around awesome birds...
Two of my hens have been jumping out of their run and on to our 4 foot chain link fence lately. The fence is covered with ivy, which houses lots of bugs, so I know why they do this. Everytime we see them, my 3 year old daughter stomps back there and tells them to get down. They totally ignore...
