    Tylan not working yet

My little bantam girl has that sickness where she's congested and her eye is bubbling. She's been that way for a while (maybe a week), sorry to say, before I was able to get her the meds. She's had one dose yesterday and one dose today, 1/4 cc IM. She's not looking any better yet. She sounds...

my flock's got the pox...need confirmation on what to do

Yep, nearly the whole flock has the dry pox. This is what I understand and how I will be "treating" from what I have read: -treat open wounds (only one is that bad) with iodine or blu kote -supplement with AviaCharge - what is the non-McMurray name for that? -eliminate/spray for mosquitoes We...

    sick or old? broody!

One of our hens is sick and I can't figure out what is going on to be able to treat her. Right now she's in a cage in the garage. -age unknown. -bantam OEG -have been fighting scaly leg mites with vaseline, never completely gone away but has definitely improved -has been laying shell-less eggs...

Wheaten Marans - photo of egg included

I'm still not sure what this girl is, but with the white legs, I'm hoping she's a Marans. She just doesn't have the coloring that I've seen in any pics of Marans and I'm starting to get concerned. (I've had a lot of chicks from my sexed runs turn out to be roos ) I'm also getting excited though...

    crowing 1-week old

A few days ago my husband told me that our week old chick - who is obviously a rooster anyway - attempt to crow! I told him he was on crack and that it was impossible. Today when everyone wanted out of the dog crate and I wasn't letting them out, the little cockerel looked right at me and...

    new chicks

I'm curious about their identity for fun more than anything, but also to sort of test myself. The listing said they'd be a mix of "Sebright, Black Rosecomb, Cochin Bantams, Japanese Bantams, Polish, Silkies, and various colored Araucana's" but I'll take Araucanas to mean Ameraucanas. Thanks...

    TOO HOT/day 19/broody on eggs/they're HATCHING!/pics added

I can't believe I didn't lose any chooks yesterday, it had to be over 105. We left the misters on all day until the late, late evening. My broody is in a large dog create in the coop, and it's HOT. The crate is ventilated, but I'm still freaked out beyond all reason that it's scorching...

how hot is too hot for broody on eggs?

It's already 100 degrees in the "southland" and it should be the same for the rest of the week. My broody is in the coop in a crate, well-ventilated. We have misters in the coop and while she's not in the direct line of the misters, she gets a cool breeze now and again. She's standing every so...

broody's comb is very pale - ADDED PICS

I just checked on my broody girl, who is on day 5. She's settling herself back on the nest after her daily break and I changed her water. I noticed that her comb is very, very pale...almost a muted rose color. Why is this happening and what do I do? I guess the first thing to do is check her for...

    I candled!

I quickly and nervously candled six of the twelve eggs under my broody. They've been under her since Monday night so this is...day 4, almost day 5? We saw veins! And little bitty chick blobs! The green one was hard for me to see through but I wasn't sure if it was empty or not. One of the eggs...

they're under her! here we go! (hatches due 6/23)

I got ebay eggs this morning and let them settle all day, just put them under my broody girl right now. I put the best ones under her in the middle and a few "maybes" toward the back. We'll just have to wait and see what happens next! I'm planning on candling Friday or so. Wish me luck!

    sex my frizzle

Tee-hee! The post subject makes me laugh. I'm hoping and hoping and praying that my frizzle isn't a boy. We'll keep him anyway, but it's easier to keep one rooster rather than two, and we have a cute Polish cockerel. How can I choose between the two? Anyway, here are pictures of "her".

    broody on eggs questions

My fertile eggs should be here any minute. We're putting the finishing touches on the dog crate/broody house. I just have a few questions: -how long to let the eggs settle once they get here? 12 hrs, 24 hrs? -should I candle them when they get here to see if they're good or wait until they've...

    every egg is soft-shelled

I have an OEG hen who I think is pretty old, but we adopted her so we don't know. She's been laying nothing but soft-shelled eggs lately, I guess for about the past 10 days? Before that her eggshells were getting noticeably thinner. She eats well - laying mash, some scratch, kitchen scraps...

Marans and Penedesencas sex and confirm ID please!

These are the last four we added to our flock this year. They're about 3-4 weeks old. The lady DH got them from she said that she hatched Black, Wheaten and Partridge Penedesencas, as well as Black Copper, Cuckoo, and French Cuckoo Marans. She also said she sexed them herself and that if we got...

fertile eggs for a broody in SoCal

My RIR has gone broody and even though we should be maxed out on chicks this season, I'd still like to let her sit on some eggs. Does anyone have 2-4 fertile eggs for sale?
