    Rooster down

I know its been a while since I posted and I hate that my first post back is an "emergency" one. But I just went to feed everyone and when I fed the 5 1/2 month old BLRWs I realized that one of the roos was laying down and couldn't get up. There is two roos and one hen in there and they are...

How long do hens stay "fertile"?

I have been letting my three hens free range during the day and just now when I went to close them up for the night, I saw that the neighbors rooster was in there with them! I don't want to take the chance and eat a fertilized egg; so how long do I need to wait until their eggs will be...

    How common are double yolkers??

Well, all three of my RIRs are laying now and I think one is laying double yolkers. I have gotten three in a week (not quite sure if they are all from the same chicken though). Is that common?? I had never seen a double one before (since I only had store bought eggs) we got chickens.... What do...

Crazy how things work out sometimes...

Well, just got home from work and saw that a few of our neighbor's goats were out. So I walked down to where they were in a strip of grass between his pasture and ours. I cornered them there when I all of a sudden saw a dead chicken on the ground by my feet and not far from it, a nest with four...

How long do you keep eggs?

We keep ours on the counter top. How long is it "safe" to keep them, before they go bad? Thanks!

Neighbors buck jumped the fence!! Rant

I went down to feed my Nubian girls and wethers last night and got a wiff of buck. "Hmm" I thought to myself, since we don't have a buck. All ofa sudden I take a close look at my herd of nine and see a while boer buck in there, eating grain with the rest of them! Our neighbors buck must've...

You know you REALLY love your dog when....

.... you still let him snuggle with you, even though he was sprayed by a skunk he killed last night! That's what my dog did last night. Killed a skunk!! The smell... Absolutely indescribable. NOTHING like the "skunk road kill on the side of the road" smell. I gave him a batch right after the...

Do you eat the cracked eggs?

My hens just started laying last weekend and haven't figured out to lay in the nesting boxes yet (I'm hard boiling eggs tonight to put in there to "teach" them that's where the eggs are supposed to go. ). They have been making a "nest" out of the shavings in a corner of the coop and are laying...

I think "she" is a "he"!!

I knew this was going to happen!! I hatched 3 BLRWs a little more than a week ago and got one light one and two darker ones. I wanted a light one soooo bad and was ecstatic when the first one to hatch was a light one. I have noticed that in the past few days the light one has acted differently...

*Pic heavy!* Day old blue laced red wyandottes

I wanted to show some more pics of their first outside experience. I took them out for just a minute each, cause my camera takes pics a lot better outside and it was nice and warm. "Gimpy" ( that name's starting to stick) Chick #2 The light chick (first to hatch)

    Wyandotte chick can't walk...

It hatched late, day 23 and I had to help it out. It's been really week but now is trying to get around a bit. Looks like it has curled toes but it seems like it can't straighten its "ellbows" (?). It walks, but its feet are tucked under the body. Do you think thats just from being weak or does...

    Layena- pellets vs. crumble??

I was at the feedstore just now, picking up some layena for my 4 1/2 month old RIRs. I didn't know they made a pellet and a crumble form. What do you guys feed? And why? I asked the guy there and he recommended pellets, since they wasted less with those. But now that I got home and put some in...

*Updated pics of fluffy chicks pg 13!* Starting the final countdown

This is nerve wrecking!! Day 20 is finally here, but nothing yet. It officially started 46 minutes ago, at 6 am. All I can think of is "what if they don't hatch"? My last hatch, which was my first try, was in a home made bator and out of 6 eggs, none hatched and only 2-3 developed anything...

Confused on last three days of incubating...

Allright, y'all are gonna laugh, but I am having a complete "blonde" moment!! I am on day 16 today and pretty soon it will be time to remove the turner, crank up the humidity and sit on my hands. But... If you;re supposed to do that the last 3 days of incubation, do you start on day 19? Cause...
