What breed & sex is my "Free" bonus chicken from Murray McMurray?

Here are some pics. He/She is 8 1/2 weeks old. Much smaller than the CXers it is rooming with. I'm guessing a EE due to tufts, really concerned with the sex. That will determine if it stays or goes, sadly! Thanks for the help.

The buffet is closed! Time for the trap.

Noticed the girls going thru a lot of feed! Setup the game cam and waited. Figured it was crows while I was at work. I was wrong. Got a pic with 4 of the thieves. Got the trap set up and tied down. Bait will come later. Then wait and see. Wish me luck.

    Smoking CXer's on the UDS!

Thawed out a 8.5 & a 7 pounder. Fired up the UDS (ugly drum smoker) with some hickory chunks. Didn't brine the birds, normally do but am fighting a bug. Rubbed'em down with some BBQ dry rub and put them on the smoker. Had it running @ 275-300 took 4 hrs to hit 170 @ the breast. I do that so...

    Resurrecting an old dead thread?

It might not be to bad if it is an informational thread and the poster responds with more good info. But when the "resurrector" acts like they are in a conversation and the thread is years old! Really? Pay attention to the dates of the thread. Thanks, just getting that out there. Have a...

    Heritage Swine=Invasive Species in Michigan!

http://grist.org/locavore/michigan-threatens-small-farms-by-calling-heritage-pigs-invasive/ Interesting read, shame what the governmet does to "protect" the masses. I hate the big business arguement but, if the big pig industry doesn't push this nobody really cares. So a few hundred pigs...

Helpful hints for feeding mash, please.

I am using a broiler mash for my meaties. Or trying to feed mash I should say. Anyway, It is jamming in the feeders I built. I have to stir them every several hours. So I switched to my Harris 12 lb gravity feeder from TSC that I used successfully for crumbles in the past. I open the bottom...

    Meaties @ 18%?

My Cornish X's are doing well. 1 week old. From everything I have gleaned from here and other sites, I should be feeding a 20%-24% protein mix. The local feed mill that supplies several local farms,CSA's and small flock raisers, like myself. Recommends a 18% mash. Other then a slower growth...

    Meat Newbie?'s ablout feeding Mash.

I found a local mill that supplies area farms with "Broiler Mash" I didn't recognize the name of the company but the farms are small local market types. 50lbs for $13.00 good price for this area. So I know nothing about mash. He had a sample in a baggie. It looked like powder. Do I feed the...

Your Location is important and fun!

I have an issue with people not putting thier state, county, town or country in the profile! Its fun to see where people are living. I read a post and try to figure out what they are dealing with, but I don't know the geograpy or climate. Even empathizing with people is easier when you know...

Don't leave material in the pen for a later cleanup!

I had some fencing leaning up against the run fence. I thought it would be fine till I got around to moving it out. Last night, closing the pop door I was one hen short, a nervous Buff Orpington, 4 months old. Looked around and found her stuck in the 2x2 opening. Exhausted and bloody. She...

Readying the 1/2 in 1/2 out, roll out nest!

The older birds are 16 weeks old. All the egg posts have us eagerly awaiting. So, I went and opened and finished the roll out nest boxes. I am using Opa's design with some mods. I think the biggest mod is having half the box in the coop and the other half outside for easy collecting. I had...

My attempt to integrate safely went wrong.

I took our 6, 3-4 week old chicks and put them in a 3L x 5W x 2H pen that is covered with black plastic 1 x 1 netting. They have been in it several times over the last week for 2-3 hrs at a time. I have the pen in the main chicken area, 50 x 50 foot fenced. With the 4, 4 month chickens. Not...

    Preventative Medical Practices?

Please bear with me. I read posts that imply there is a preventative schedule being followed for shots, worms and the like. The only preventative thing I have seen is for Mareks. My question, is there a schdule for vaccines or a worming program that should be followed? Or is it respond to...
