    Is this Wyandotte a rooster

According to the principles of chicken math, you will just need more hens so they are not over-serviced. I can't say how many, because chicken math dictates you go for 4 (say to bring the number to 10) ....and come home with 33. ;):lau Good luck. :D

You know you're a backyard chicken owner when...

When you have steak and veg for dinner and put the potato peels (sweet potato, swede, parsnip, etc) in the frypan as soon as the meat come out, because you know the chickens can't eat them raw. PS they really love their special peels (and I hate sorting compost/chicken scraps, so we are all happy!)

Permaculture chickens who are too big for the chicken tractor and won't eat snails or slugs. Really good at being pampered like princesses!

    Rooster maybe

No expert (but there are many here that are), but I think roosters are happy housed together as long as there are no hens involved (sort of like humans). So, one rooster can be with the hens being hen-pecked, while the rest are in a separate bachelor pad, hanging out and leaving the feed lid up...

    Rooster maybe

I'm in Australia, but my breeder has her chicks professionally sexed, which she advises is still only about 95% accurate, so she then guarantees the chicks are female. I had one that was an obvious rooster by 6 weeks (that is very early to know) and she agreed and took it back, because we can't...

    Deep litter method

All experimental for me at the moment, but, I do a deep litter in the small run under my coop/bedding box. The upstairs bedding area has a fairly normal layer of bedding material which is kept as clean as possible and DRY. In my outdoor chicken yard, I do a compost system - Jason Rhodes style...

    Big enough?

I have Wyandottes, Australorps and an Orpington. The grown size of these birds are so much bigger than I expected/estimated. I bought a ready made 'coop' supposedly suitable for up to 8 hens. I had three youngsters and there seemed plenty of room, but bought two grown hens and gave them the...

Yep! :thumbsup I went out to dinner with a friend and they asked to see pictures of our latest grandchild. I was quite embarrassed how many hen and chick pics there were before I found some grandchildren ones. oops :jumpy

You know you're a backyard chicken owner when...

.... when you do the dishes twice a day, with a hose. ;) (As for the people-ones in the kitchen, sometimes they pile up a little. Hopefully, the desire to keep thinking of special foods and treats might wear off one day and I can get... anything else... done.) :D Picking herbs, sprouting seeds...

The new hens finally used the ramp; little successes!

Update: A tip for young players: I kept the crate in place in case of future needs (such as if anychook felt like laying an egg and didn't want to head 'upstairs' to nesting boxes, or as a windbreak should the weather change again.) It was taking up room so I removed the piled up litter from...

The new hens finally used the ramp; little successes!

Here in east coast Australia, we have been experiencing quite a heat wave. My days have been full of iced water and frozen grape duties and making sure of solid shade during the days. I got my two beautiful new hens ( 1 Lavender Orpington and 1 huge Gold Laced Wyandotte) on such a day and...

I used to do this before chickens, so heavens help me now. My daughter remembers coming home from school to the wonderful smells of Mum's cooking, only to find the stew was for the dog.

You know you're a backyard chicken owner when...

When you make yourself a salad for lunch.... and one for the chicks and one for the hens. Wish I took a pic. It made me laugh at myself today, a bowl for my salad and two stainless plates beside. We ate the same except I added one or two non-chicken-friendly bits to finish mine. (Theirs were all...
