What's the best breed of dog to raise with our chickens?

My mom and I are thinking of getting a puppy to raise with the chickens. One that can protect them and be friendly towards them. We need a dog that can fight off coyotes, bobcats, and other predators to our flock. We live in the desert of Cali so we need one that won't over heat while he/she is...

    Umm...dog shampoo...chickens....fleas&mites....

I told my mom to go to Van Dam Farms to get shampoo for our silkie hen because she had a bunch of these whitish orange bugs on her vent area. But my dad said "no you can go on the base (EAFB) and get stuff there"... My mom picked out Hartz Flea and Tick shampoo... citrus scent. That is for dogs...

    Can someone please help?

This is part of the thread, since my dogs ARE family... Our dog Lucky is in bad shape. As soon as I saw him walking strange I told my mom and we took him to the nearest vet. The vet said he had a tightened muscle and he should be fine after some rest and massage. The next day was way worse...

What are these little buggies in the chicken feed?

We have these big barrel thats used for feed. One time I was getting more feed for them and I saw these little blackish bugs strating to come out of the feed when I scooped up some. I was scared because I thought they were ants at first, so I took the scooper and started hitting the feed like...

Theres some kind of nipple like thing on my roo.

He's in moult and near his rump where most of the feathers are gone, theres this bump that looks kinda like a nipple. I poked it and its not mushy or soft, its hardish. I noticed that on my silkie pullet aswell when I was checking her for mites. She doesnt have any but she has that nipple bump...

My barred rock roo has a boo-boo from molting.

His rump/tail is bare due to him molting. I noticed one of the hens pecking at his rump before, but he stopped her. Today I saw blood, at first I thought it was fresh but I looked closer and its dried. How did that happen? I'm not able to pick him up, he's a new addition to our family and he...

Silkie bantam with some kind of cross beak problem.

We just got a black silkie bantam and a pullet. I checked out the pullet, she seems to be fine but I'm still looking for those itty bitty mites. When I checked the hen... Oh boy, the mites have really gotten to her She has that problem with her feet, you know that's caused by scarly mites and...

What breed was my roo (pic)?

I'm sorry I don't have a better pic of him. He was killed by a dog we used to have (now in the pound). This was when he was a little younger then when he died, and I thought he was a brahma. But he wasn't big or fattish looking, and he had a single comb. Plus he had very little feathering on his...

    Treats for my cochins?

I am not quite sure what my cochins like as treats. They are young, the girls only about 3-5 weeks and the roo is 12 weeks. They are tiny compared to the hens we saw at the ranch where we bought them (they are giant blue cochins). We've tried seedless hybrid grapes, as our older hens seem to...

Standard Cochin pullets, dos and don'ts?

We recently bought blue cochins! 7 girls and a roo. Well actually the roo is white, and 2 of the girls are black. They are a bit skiddish and afraid of us. How long will it take for them to warm up to us? Also we keep them seperated from our other hens. The other hens are about 5 months old...

How do I post pics on here?

I've tried everything. I opened my libraries, went to pictures, double clicked on a pic of my roo and it didn't show up on the post thing. I recall someone saying to go to my uploads.... Is that on the page somewhere?

What are some docile chicken breeds?

Our rooster is a real butt-head to me and not to my mom He doesn't do the kinda stuff I've read about, such as finding food and calling the girls so they can have it. No he doesn't do that, instead he tries to eat it all up and steal from the girls. And I don't know what breed he is so I'm not...

I have a roo which I believed was a light brahma for awhile. But he has a single comb while the brahma roos ive seen have pea combs. then i googled some stuff and he does sort of resemble a delaware. plus he's not as big as the brahma roos ive seen. and he has feathered feet and legs. is he a...

Am I a weenie for being afraid of my own rooster? Help please.

He does that challenge/intimidation dance at me whenever I look at him or sit down. One time, one of the hens took my hair ribbon out of my hand and I had to chase her for it. I had to corner her and out of the corner of my eye I saw the roo puff his neck feathers, raise his wings, and run at...

Light brahmas have pea combs, correct?

My light brahma roo has a single comb. So is he a mixed breed? Plus he's not as big as some of the brahma roos I've seen. Oh and he drops his right wing and drags it sometimes. That's the mating dance right? Well he does it to me when I stare at him but when I try to pet him he either pecks at...

What is my roo roo doing?

Sometimes when I sit down and stare at him he drags his right wing and it looks like he's stumbling when he walks and doing that. At first I thought that was a submission behaviour, so I tried petting him. He pecked at my hand He did the same thing again so I tried petting him again and he ran...

    Can chickens eat soy milk?

Yes I know there is a food chart on here but I don't remember seeing anything about soy milk. I hope they can because I was drinking some outside and there was a little bit left so I tipped the cup over to one of the girls and she sipped it up. She kept sneezing though. Also will my roo get sick...
