Thanks for your responses I will be buying feed today so will go ahead and just get the layer pellets. Here are a couple of pics I took a few days ago of our young brood
Apollo is our rooster and he is such a handsome fellow!!
Ok, from what I have read you aren't supposed to start feeding layer pellets until they begin to lay... However, my Delawares are now 22 weeks old and haven't started laying yet (probably due to it being winter) so do I still need to purchase chick feed or can I start them on layer pellets? I...
Ok, so I will move them out to their new home on Tuesday. Second question, should I keep them in their coop for 4-5 days until they get used to that is where they should sleep before opening the door to their run? (There are windows in the coop and vents so there is air flow)...
I have eleven four week old Delaware chicks that are getting too big for the their inside brooder. They keep knocking over their little feeder and waterer. Is it too soon to move them out to their newly built chicken coop and run? They are pretty feathered out. We live in MS where it has...

1. I have 14 soon-to-be 2 yr old Australorp hens and a roo. If I put out a foragecake how may should I put out and how often? Would I need to put it in a holder or would it be alright to just lay them on the ground (dirt flooring in their run). Or should I just chip off...

Thanks classicredone and ddawn, that is what I needed to know. I was going to try feeding organic chick starter/grower/layer but it seems that is going to be way to difficult to find in my neck of the woods (MS). So I will go with the Purina Start&Grow and then the Layena when they...
I am looking at different starter/grower feeds for my new chicks (which will arrive in a couple of weeks). I am ordering my chicks from MyPetChicken and plan on having them vaccinated for Marek's. I was told by the lady at McMurrays that if I have my chicks vaccinated I shouldn't give them...
I am purchasing 10 Delaware chicks and would like to get the organic chick starter; it comes in 5lb bag -- does anyone know how long that would last for 10 chicks? The site I was looking at said it would last for one week, but I am assuming that is for more than the number of chicks I will have...
Not sure if this is the proper forum but here goes....
I have read that DE is a great thing to use for your chickens. My question is: I am about to purchase 10 Delaware chicks from McMurray's. While I was shopping I noticed that they offer a product called Poultry Protector; if I use DE in my...

How long does a molt last on average? Hmm..might have another pesky snake stealing some eggs; definitely not a crow or anything else as they are enclosed in a run and we have a layer box for them so anything larger than a snake can't get in...
I heard that if you put sulfur down...

Age: they will be 2yrs old end of July -- should they already be going way down in production?
Feed: we give them layer pellets, scratch 2x day and they have a small container of oyster shells
Environment: besides the heat things haven't changed much in the past two months. The...
Hi Ya'll,
I have 12 Australorp hens that used to give me a minimum of 2 dozen eggs a week and now I'm lucky if I getting 6-8 eggs. This has been going on for the past month or so. I know that heat can sometimes affect egg production but I've had these girls for two years and the heat didn't...
Update:
Noticed that some people on here use cement mixer pans for their droppings. Would I need to put something in the pans (eg. sand, shavings) or just leave them empty? Seems these would be more economical and easier to clean.
Just want to say really enjoying it here at BYC!!
We have pretty much finished the plans for our new chicken coop but have a few questions about dropping boards
Our coop is going to be 6x8 (for 10 Delawares): how large do we need to make the dropping boards? What do materials do we need...
After looking at innumerable sites online in search of an affordable coop w/run for 10 large chickens to absolutely no avail, we have decided to build our own. Only thing is... we have little idea of how to go about it Looked at a lot of really nice chicken houses here but really need more...
