This huge egg was actually a double yolker! We used it last night and the yolk was a beautiful dark yellow/orange.

Thanks. I am also hoping that she starts laying daily instead of every other day.

I have to brag now... Elphaba laid her fourth egg today and it weighed 2 ounces! her first egg was 1.4 oz. and Snowball's egg (leghorn) was 2.3 ounces and she's been laying for about a year now... Wow! I hope Elphaba's eggs stay big!!

We also got my hens in early April 2012 and got our first egg at the end of August. By the beginning of september they were all laying.

A note on the roosters: I would gladly keep a rooster if A: We had enough room in the coop and B: They would be quiet enough so that the entire neighborhood wouldn't hear them crow. (I'm illegal... sort of... )

Oh well, I have an Australorp and a Leghorn, so I can expect lots of eggs either way :)

I read somewhere that the Leghorn holds the record, with 371 eggs in a year. Don't ask how that hen did that. I have no clue.

Her voice is most likely turning into a cluck instead of a peep.

Yes, she just seems to have more brown pigment in one eye. But i agree, as long as she's friendly and she lays eggs.

My Lorp has crazy eye color- one is darker brown, and the other is solid gray. Weird, I've never seen different eye colors in one chicken before. Another sign that Elphaba is definitely not "breeding quality."

My two pullets are 16 weeks old now. I hope that the "introduction to the hens" process goes by quickly and painlessly.

We used to have a rooster. The thing that made us ship him off was 1/3 of a crow at maybe around 6 or 7 weeks, I can't really remember.

Thanks for the broodiness clarification. All of these australorps are looking real good! I'm not in town now, but when I get back I'll introduce my now 16 wk. olds to the hens.

I've tried asking this a few times, but I guess we were caught up in Marek's/vitamin deficiencies, so I will try once more. How often do your Australorps go broody??

Oh no... From what I've heard, Marek's is pretty darn bad...
