I have not needed to warm my big insulated coop, but in my Eglu's, I use heated pet beds in the nesting boxes. They are weight activated, and only 15W or so. I put shavings on them so they don't get all poopy. On really chilly nights (teens and lower) they all huddle together in the nest boxes...

to Dee and all of you here; thank you for all your sypathies - it is hard looking out my window and not seeing Luna on her porch. It sounds like raccoon attacks are on the rise everywhere.

Hi CR! Good to chat with you again! You sure have lots of sparkly bits on your avatar. Thanks for sending me e-mail. I knew if I'd log on here to see what was going on, I'd spend half my day reading posts!

Luna's loss has been much harder for me than all the others I have lost to dogs and other predators over the years. My chickens roam on over an acre of land and I can accept an occasional loss, but I expect it to be the less friendly chickens that spend more time in the woods or in the orchard...

Love it! We have not had TV since 2004. The shows you mention are the ones I miss the most.

mikeyb Thanks for the list - we have recently eaten products on it, and have had some pretty bad bouts of GI stuff going on, but I was unaware that the list went beyond TJ's peanut butter. Now I have Skippy - at least until this all clears up.

Hi all! I have not visited in a while, and now I'm 200 posts behind. I have been busy studying for my Enrolled Agent Tax exams with the IRS, and this morning I passed the second test (I did the first one 13 days ago) - one to go! I was feeling all happy about passing the exam (in Puyallup...

I was going to do cornbread - but now you have me thinking GF biscuits - somewhere I have an excellent recipe... The beans were still rock-hard after soaking them overnight, so I let them soak most of the day today as well this evening I made the chilli base to cook the beans in - smells...

I'm on all glacial till on a steep mountainside as well. I try and build a raised bed or 2 each year so my garden is slowly growing. We put a retaining wall on a hill for blueberries; they are not very productive. I have an orchard as well. For it, I had to hire a fairly large tractor digging...

Thanks for the introduction - gorgeuous dog! I'm so sorry about your brother, so tragic. I'm glad you have such a strong bond with your dog to help you through.

They do now! They had looked into it before but thought it was too pricey, but after a 3 more chickens and chasing the neighbors horse around and some complaints to animal control by the horse owner, they decided to get the fence. I only hear their dogs now. We have an invisible fence for our...

Thanks! I'm walking about an hour a day and I try and get out to the lake with my canoe several times a week. The canoe is a 2 person inflatable, so that is work too! Being out on the lake is a relaxing break from a hectic fall. I'm enjoying all your posts I come across - they are filled...

I have a deal with the neighbors - a 50 pound sack of feed plus $20 for each bird their dogs kill. They got invisible fences after their dogs got in my yard this spring.

I got my beans soaking in the BIG crockpot now! Yum yum! Had a pretty good dinner tonight because I still have a few cans of ranch beans, and I had frozen chicken patties (carmelized onion and spice - gluten free! - Costco!) I made myself a burger with a chicken patty, more carmelized walla...

Thanks for the Ranch Beans recipe - I even have all the ingredients in my house, so I will make it tomorro - YUM! That King Ranch Casserole link looked good too. I found a use for my chicken feed sacks. I have been doing a lot of book trading on Paperbackswap.com . I cut up the bags and sew...
